Original vintage travel poster for Iran Persia featuring a great patterned design of an Iranian holy shrine. Stylised lettering reads - Gold and Turquoise Repose and Majesty of Holy Shrines, most likely referring to pilgrimage sites in Mashhad and Qom. Issued by Iran National Tourist Organisation. (INTO) Printed by Offset Press Inc, Tehran, Iran. Very good condition, creases on margin. Mashhad , also spelled Mashad or Meshad, is the second most populous city in Iran and the capital of Razavi Khorasan Province. It is located in the northeast of the country, near the borders with Turkmenistan and Afghanistan. It has a population of 3,001,184 inhabitants (2016 census), which includes the areas of Mashhad Taman and Torqabeh. It was a major oasis along the ancient Silk Road connecting with Merv to the east. The city is named after the "shrine" of Imam Reza, the eighth Shia Imam. The Imam was buried in a village in Khorasan, which afterwards gained the name Mashhad, meaning the place of martyrdom. Every year, millions of pilgrims visit the Imam Reza shrine. The Abbasid caliph Harun al-Rashid is also buried within the shrine.Qom is considered holy by Shi?a Islam, as it is the site of the shrine of Fatimah bint Musa, sister of Imam Ali ibn Musa Rida (Persian Imam Reza, 789–816 CE). The city is the largest center for Shi?a scholarship in the world, and is a significant destination of pilgrimage, with around twenty million pilgrims visiting the city every year, the majority being Iranians but also other Shi'a Muslims from all around the world. Qom is famous for a Persian brittle toffee known as Sohan, considered a souvenir of the city and sold by 2,000 to 2,500 “Sohan” shops. Soviet and Palestine Poster Collection
This extraordinary collection was acquired by our seller during his trips to the USSR and Lebanon in the 1960s and 1970s.
Soviet Posters: In March 1969, the consignor was selected to join a UK delegation representing the National Union of Students on an extended visit to the USSR. The trip lasted several weeks, during which time he stayed in Moscow, Leningrad and Tallinn, where he acquired some of the posters. Later that year, he wrote to the Soviet authorities and they sent several packages of posters to him at university.
Palestine Posters: The Palestinian posters were obtained by the consignor in the summer of 1971 when he left the University of Manchester to travel to the Middle East. He had studied Middle East politics as part of his university course and was intending to apply for a post graduate course at the AmericanUniversity in Beirut. On arrival he realised that the university was not fully functioning due to the ongoing political and military situation in the area, and the already unstable situation was rapidly deteriorating. At the time, he was considering becoming a journalist and arranged an introduction with Bassam Abu Sharif, the spokesperson for the PFLP (Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine), for an interview. During this meeting in September 1971 he was given many of the posters that form this collection. The new symbol of the PFLP had only been adopted in May 1969 and these posters are among the earliest published by the Palestinian resistance.
