(INTO) Printed by Offset Press Inc, Tehran, Iran. Good condition, tears and creases on margin, small stain on margin, paper loss on margin. Nishapur or Nishabur (also Romanized as N?sh?p?r, Nišâpur, Ni?apur, N?sh?b?r, Neysh?b?r, and Neeshapoor, from Middle Persian: New-Shabuhr, meaning "New City of Shapur", "Fair Shapur",[3] or "Perfect built of Shapur") is a city in Razavi Khorasan Province, capital of the Nishapur County and former capital of Province Khorasan, in northeastern Iran, situated in a fertile plain at the foot of the Binalud Mountains. It had an estimated population of 239,185 as of 2011 and its county 433,105. Nearby are the turquoise mines that have supplied the world with turquoise for at least two millennia. The city was founded in the 3rd century by Shapur I as a Sasanian satrapy capital. Nishapur later became the capital of Tahirid dynasty and was reformed by Abdullah Tahir in 830, and was later selected as the capital of Seljuq dynasty by Tughril in 1037. From the Abbasid era to the Mongol invasion of Khwarezmia and Eastern Iran, the city evolved into a significant cultural, commercial, and intellectual center within the Islamic world. Nishapur, along with Merv, Herat and Balkh were one of the four great cities of Greater Khorasan and one of the greatest cities in the middle ages, a seat of governmental power in eastern of caliphate, a dwelling place for diverse ethnic and religious groups, a trading stop on commercial routes from Transoxiana and China, Iraq and Egypt. Nishapur reached the height of its prosperity under the Samanids in the 10th century, but was destroyed and the entire population slaughtered by Mongols in 1221. This massacre, combined with subsequent earthquakes and other invasions are believed to have destroyed the pottery industry the city was known for. Soviet and Palestine Poster Collection
This extraordinary collection was acquired by our seller during his trips to the USSR and Lebanon in the 1960s and 1970s.
Soviet Posters: In March 1969, the consignor was selected to join a UK delegation representing the National Union of Students on an extended visit to the USSR. The trip lasted several weeks, during which time he stayed in Moscow, Leningrad and Tallinn, where he acquired some of the posters. Later that year, he wrote to the Soviet authorities and they sent several packages of posters to him at university.
Palestine Posters: The Palestinian posters were obtained by the consignor in the summer of 1971 when he left the University of Manchester to travel to the Middle East. He had studied Middle East politics as part of his university course and was intending to apply for a post graduate course at the AmericanUniversity in Beirut. On arrival he realised that the university was not fully functioning due to the ongoing political and military situation in the area, and the already unstable situation was rapidly deteriorating. At the time, he was considering becoming a journalist and arranged an introduction with Bassam Abu Sharif, the spokesperson for the PFLP (Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine), for an interview. During this meeting in September 1971 he was given many of the posters that form this collection. The new symbol of the PFLP had only been adopted in May 1969 and these posters are among the earliest published by the Palestinian resistance.
