GILL CATHLES NO Dims (hxlxd) 42.0 x 59.4 x 1.2cm Acrylic on vinyl wallpaper [perspex bolted front; not shown in the image] https://gillcathles.wordpress.com Almost 80% of women killed by men in the UK are killed by a male family member or by a husband, partner or boyfriend. On average, two women are killed by their partner or ex-partner every week in England and Wales. In the US, nearly three women are murdered every day by current or former husbands, partners or boyfriends.  This is domestic violence. This is a crime often reported as an ‘isolated incident with no further threat to the public’, a response which denies the scale of the issue and the much wider problem, for society as a whole, of gender-based violence [Women’s Aid, 2017].  The wallpaper which provides the background for this artwork symbolises the domestic context of violent crimes against women. The message ‘NO’ scrawled on the paper can be seen as a protest and as an act of defiance, demonstrating solidarity with others suffering the same fate.  ‘NO’ is a marker, a cry for help and a dreadful warning.
