Zippo, Bradford, PA. An unusual and historically interesting 10k gold filled lighter PAT.2517191 Pat Pend. Made in 1956 10k gold filled plain case with 5 hinge flip cover signed Zippo to base. The case with engraved black enamelled signature for Anastasio Somoza Garcia. The removable inner case with wick and flint stamped by manufacture, made in USA with Patent and Patent Pending. Dim. 39mm x 57mm. From the family of former President of Haiti, (1950-1956) Paul Eugene Magloire, he was apparently gifted the lighter by the President of Nicaragua, (1950-1956) Anastasio Somoza Garcia prior to his assassination in September 1956. Historical photographs would indicate the two Presidents enjoyed an informal and close friendship, befitting such a personal gift. According to our research, 1956 was the only year this style of lighter, that retailed for US$18, was stamped with both Patent and Patent Pending to the inner case.
