§ Desmond Morris FLS hon. caus (British 1928-) The Suitor's Friendsigned with initials and dated 07 (lower right); further signed, titled and dated to the reversewatercolour and ink28.5 x 20cmFootnote: An internationally renowned zoologist, ethologist, and author of more than 60 scientific texts, Desmond Morris has also received widespread acclaim for his work as a surrealist artist. Hugely prolific in both his scientific and artistic pursuits, Morris has produced in excess of 3000 surrealist works and has exhibited alongside some of the most influential figures in 20th century art, including Joan Miró. The grandson of an enthusiastic naturalist, Morris developed a fascination with the natural world, both artistically and scientifically, from an early age. Whilst seemingly divergent from one another, as Morris grew, these interests flourished in tandem, as Morris continued to paint and exhibit during his studies in zoology at Birmingham and Oxford universities. After completing his studies, Morris was appointed as the Head of the Granada TV and Film Unit for the Zoological Society of London, where he wrote and hosted hundreds of television programmes on animal behaviour. As in the present lot, amoebic forms mutating into barely legible human figures dominate Morris’ surrealist works and no doubt echo the central thesis of his seminal text, The Naked Ape (1967), which posited that the boundary separating the human from the animal is far more fragile than we would ever care to admit.

BRUEGHEL family; Second half of the sixteenth century."Landscape."Oil on oak panel. CradledPresents frame following ancient models.Measures: 36 x 18 cm; 70 x 54 cm (frame). With a relatively high horizon, where the sky composed by a gradation of blue tonalities, hardly occupies space, the author, grants the protagonism of the scene to the landscape. A costumbrist view conceived through successive planes. In the center of the scene, two figures hold a conversation. However, their small dimensions indicate the artist's interest in capturing the landscape. By theme and style it is very close to the painting developed by the important dynasty of Dutch painters, the Brueghels. The meticulous and expressive drawing characterizing the characters and their vivid behaviors is combined with a freer brushstroke in the representation of the landscape, also splendid, working in different levels of depth, assuming bluish tones in the horizon.During the 17th century, the Flemish school experienced great splendor and artistic development. The strategic location of the area, and the presence of one of the most important ports of the time, gave rise to the proliferation of a new social class, composed of merchants, who possessed a large capita. This new society enjoyed the advantages of their economic position, however, they did not have the aristocratic titles, so they began a race for social position through culture. In addition, due to the rupture with Rome and the iconoclastic tendency of the reformed Church, paintings with religious themes ended up being eliminated as a decorative complement with a devotional purpose, and mythological stories lost their heroic and sensual tone, in accordance with the new society. Thus, portraits, landscapes and animals, still life and genre painting were the thematic formulas that became valuable in their own right and, as objects of domestic furniture - hence the small size of the paintings - were acquired by individuals of almost all classes and social strata: The tandem formed by Peter Paul Rubens and Jan Brueghel the Elder, the one composed by Hendrick van Balen and Jan Brueghel de Velours, or the one comprising the figures of Jan Brueghel the Younger and Pieter Van Avont, are proof of the success of this type of contributions in 17th century Flanders.

1957 Panther 598cc Model 100Registration no. 4811 UFrame no. 26184Engine no. 58MS029BBy 1923, the first bikes named Panther, rather than P&M, appeared as sports machines with a reputation for a decent turn of speed, and reliability to boot. Throughout the twenties the company thrived, although the lightweight end of the range, with Villiers engines, proved to be less popular than the larger models, and were eventually dropped. In the early 1930s the Red Panthers gave way to the Redwings and the ubiquitous big-finned sloper engine, so familiar in post-WWII years. During World War II, Phelon and Moore turned their attention to making parts for some of the aircraft manufacturers involved in War production. Post-War, the Panther range included the 250 and 350 models, and eventually were added to, once again, by Villiers-engined models, but the mainstay of the line-up remained the big sloper Model 100, and from 1958 onward, the larger capacity 650cc Model 120. The deceased owner acquired 4811 U in running order in approximately 1995, and used the machine regularly every year thereafter, until two years ago. It was maintained as required throughout that period and saw use in tandem with his other machines. It has been improved by the addition of indicators, for use in modern traffic, although one of the front ones has been damaged at some time. Standing for the last two years, the Panther will require re-commissioning and safety checks prior to returning to the road. It is presently on SORN. Documentation includes a current V5C, an older-type V5C, an old V5, a quantity of old tax discs, and miscellaneous papers.Footnotes:As with all Lots in the Sale, this Lot is sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness, and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Property of a deceased's estate 1910 Triumph 3½hpRegistration no. SV 4316Frame no. 152324Engine no. 8564-4-2The first Triumph motorcycle of 1902 used a Belgian Minerva engine, but within a few years the Coventry firm - originally a bicycle manufacturer founded by German immigrants Siegfried Bettman and Maurice Schulte - was building its own power units. The first of these - a 298cc single-cylinder sidevalve - arrived in 1904. This first engine was not without its weaknesses, pistons and bores wore out quickly and the curious 'tandem down-tube' frame in which it was installed broke, but these shortcomings were soon sorted and within a couple of years 'Triumph' was a byword for reliability. The famous 3½hp model first appeared in 1907. Originally of 453cc, its sidevalve engine was enlarged to 476cc in 1908 and finally to 499cc in 1910 before being superseded by the 4hp model in 1914. This early Triumph motorcycle was previously owned by one Reginald Connett of Berkshire (from 8th June 1993) and before him by Mr A R Taylor. Formerly registered 'LW 3193', the machine comes with two Pioneer Certificates issued in 1987 and 1995 respectively. The accompanying history file also contains old/current V5C documents; a quantity of MoTs (most recent expired June 2012); photocopy instruction books; assorted correspondence; and a selection of photographs of the Triumph competing in the Pioneer Run and Banbury Run.Footnotes:As with all Lots in the Sale, this Lot is sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness, and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

1930 Peugeot 190S TorpedoRegistration no. The company is the second oldest motor manufacturer in the world, having commenced car production in 1889. New for 1928, the Peugeot 190 was a direct descendent of the Quadrilette, one of the most successful examples of the 'big car in miniature'. The 190 was powered by an 719cc sidevalve engine with detachable cylinder head, which was coupled to a three-speed, worm-drive rear transaxle. Side-by-side seating replaced the Quadrilette's tandem arrangement, and now there were front-wheel brakes. An older (year 2000) restoration, this charming Vintage-era 190S Torpedo was purchased from a European private collection by the enthusiast vendor in March of this year to take part in the Longstone Light Car Race at Oulton Park. The little Peugeot finished well, running for 80 minutes and averaging 34mph! It has been used for pub trips since. Of high quality manufacture, the car features an ash body frame and aluminium body panels, and is said to have positive steering and good brakes. Other notable features include a good hood and side screens; an electric starter; and a recently renewed high-output sealed 6V battery (cost £150). UK taxes were paid in May 2021 and the car comes with Netherlands registration papers.Footnotes:Vendor Score Total: 73/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. A fine Second War ‘Tobruk’ Brigade Major’s D.S.O., Order of St. John, group of eight awarded to Major G. Bestford, 6th South African Infantry Brigade Heaquarters, 2nd South African Division, a veteran of the Great War who was wounded in action whilst serving in the ranks of the 20th (Service) Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers (1st Tyneside Scottish) on the First Day of the Battle of the Somme. Subsequently commissioned in to the 25th (Service) Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers (1st Tyneside Irish), Bestford joined the South African Police after the Great War. He was mobilised for service during the Second War, and was taken prisoner of war at the Fall of Tobruk, 21 June 1942. Bestford returned to the South African Police after the war, rose to District Commandant of Durban, and played a prominent role during the Royal Visit to South Africa in 1947 Distinguished Service Order, G.VI.R., silver-gilt and enamel, reverse officially dated ‘1946’, with integral top riband bar; The Order of St. John of Jerusalem, Serving Brother’s, breast badge, silver and enamels; British War and Victory Medals (2. Lieut. G. Bestford.) severe edge bruise to BWM; 1939-45 Star; Africa Star; War Medal 1939-45, with M.I.D. oak leaf; Africa Service Medal, Second War campaign awards all officially impressed (SAP195478 G. Bestford) mounted as originally worn, and subsequently additionally mounted on card for display, generally nearly very fine or better (8) £2,800-£3,200 --- D.S.O. London Gazette 19 December 1946: ‘In recognition of gallant and distinguished services at Tobruk in 1942.’ The original recommendation, given by Brigadier F. W. Cooper, O.C. 6 SA Bde, states: ‘From 10 Jan 42 to 21 Jun 42 Major Bestford was my [Brigadier F. W. Cooper, O.C. 6 SA Bde] Brigade Major. During that period he carried out his duties with entire disregard for his own comfort under what at times were very trying and dangerous conditions. He was mentioned in despatches for his work during operations at Sollum and Halfaya in Jan 42. During the period the brigade was attached to 1 S.A. Div. at Gazala - Mar - Apr 42 and during the period prior to the fall of Tobruk - Apr - Jun 42 his conduct was an example to all the work he put in over the six months, especially during the two vital days prior to the surrender, entitles him, in my opinion, to a D.S.O. for which I recommend him.’ Order of St John, Serving Brother, London Gazette 2 January 1953. M.I.D. London Gazette 15 December 1942: ‘In recognition of gallant and distinguished services in the Middle East during the period November, 1941, to April, 1942.’ George Bestford was one of six sons born to Thomas Bestford, and was born in Gateshead, County Durham in October 1897. He was educated at the local Higher Grade Secondary School, and aged 17 falsified his age to enlist in the 20th (Service) Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers (1st Tyneside Scottish), 26 October 1914. Bestford advanced to Sergeant, and served with the Battalion in the French theatre of war from 9 January 1916. The Battalion served as part of the 102nd Infantry Brigade on the Somme, and Bestford was wounded in action, 1 July 1916. On the latter date the Battalion were fighting in tandem with the 4th Tyneside Scottish: ‘Owing to the artillery barrage and the intense machine gun fire and the distance (800 yds) of no man’s land to be traversed, the two battalions were almost wiped out, though the positions of the dead showed that they pushed on to the enemy’s second line of trenches before they were annihilated.’ (Battalion War Diary refers) On the first day of the Battle of the Somme the 20th Battalion suffered casualties of 16 officers and 337 other ranks killed, and 10 officers and 268 other ranks wounded. Bestford was amongst the latter, and was evacuated back to the UK. His South African Police service files show that he subsequently received a G.O.C.’s Divisional Commendation in recognition of his gallantry on 1 July 1916. Whilst recuperating from his wounds, Bestford would have received news that his brother William had been killed in action whilst serving with the Royal Engineers, 21 July 1916. The following month Bestford transferred as Acting Company Quartermaster Sergeant to the 29th (Reserve) Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers. He was subsequently posted to the 3rd Battalion, and then attached to the 84th Training Reserve Battalion at Hornsea. Major A. E. Ken recommended Bestford for a commission in March 1917: ‘This N.C.O. came very much under my observations, while at Home he attended several Courses of Instruction and on each one did very well indeed, on one occasion he came under the notice of the Brigadier who complimented him through his C.O. on his success... On Service he was even better, as a leader of men he is a success, I never knew him to shirk any danger or fatigues, and his coolness under Shell and Rifle fire is splendid. I regret to say his C.O. [Lieutenant Colonel C. Sillery] was killed as I knew that he had marked Sgt. Bestford out for distinction and no officers being left (All either killed or wounded) there was no one to put the recommendation forward. I think with a little training at a Cadet School he will make a very good Officer.’ After the requisite time with an Officer Cadet Battalion, Bestford was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Northumberland Fusiliers in October 1917. Bestford lost another brother, when his eldest brother Robert was killed in action serving with the Durham Light Infantry, 1 December 1917. Bestford was posted to France for service with the 25th (Service) Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers (2nd Tyneside Irish). After the war he was attached as a Signalling Officer to the 2/4th Battalion, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry for service in Syria and Egypt. Bestford advanced to Lieutenant in May 1919, and relinquished his commission in March of the following year. He sailed for Natal, South Africa in April 1921. Bestford joined the South African Police in June 1921, and advanced from Constable to Captain, District Officer and Station Officer by June 1940. He was appointed Captain, 1st South African Police Battalion, Union Defence Force later that month, and was appointed to the Staff Headquarters, 6th Infantry (Police) Brigade. Bestford embarked with the 2nd South African Division, and arrived in Egypt in June 1941. He served across North Africa, at the Battles of Sollum and Halfaya and was promoted Major in February 1942. Bestford served as Brigade Major, 6th South African Infantry Brigade Headquarters, and under constant attack from Rommel’s Afrika Korps, the Allied Forces retreated from the Gazala Line throughout May - June 1942. The Garrison at Tobruk became isolated and the majority of the 2nd South African Division was captured there, en masse, as prisoners of war, on the 21st June following General Orders to surrender. Unable to escape, Bestford was taken prisoner of war by the Italians and interned at Campo 75 (Bari). He was subsequently transferred to Germany, and interned in Stalag VII-A, Stalag V-C, and finally at Oflag XII-B at Hadamar. Bestford was repatriated in April 1945, and was recommended retrospectively for the D.S.O. Bestford returned to South Africa, and resumed his employment with the South African Police. He was appointed Commanding Officer, Police Training Depot, Pretoria. During the Royal Visit of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth to South Africa in 1947, Bestford had the honour of commanding the mounted escort and the Guard of Honour on special occasions throughout the tour. An Italian late 16th/early 17th century carved walnut credenzaprobably of Tuscan originThe rectangular top with a fluted edge moulding, above three panelled entrelac carved frieze drawers interspersed with four strap-fluted scrolled corbel angles, over three ovolo and bead-and-reel moulded panelled doors, the two end doors applied with large carved lion mask handles, enclosing one shelf, interspersed by four stop-fluted Tuscan pilasters, each panelled end carved with a large central flowerhead roundel, on a stop-fluted plinth base terminating in lion paw feet, the top rests loose, the underside of the top is applied with a 19th century paper label with an ink inscription which reads: 'Sgr. Giuseppe Bellini, Firenze', 209cm wide x 64cm deep x 109cm high, (82in wide x 25in deep x 42 1/2in high)Footnotes:ProvenanceDuring the late 19th century the present lot was evidently acquired by Irene von Hildebrand, wife of the major German sculptor Adolf von Hildebrand (1847-1921), while the couple lived in the then secularized monastery of San Francesco in Florence. Irene Schauffelen (her maiden name) had married Adolf in 1877. This credenza was apparently purchased by Irene from Giuseppe Bellini who was a major antiques dealer based in Florence. In fact the Bellini family, who today have been involved in the fine and decorative arts for well over 250 years, had by that time already established themselves as arguably one of the most important dynasties within the realm of Italian antiques. During the 1890s, or perhaps just prior to then, this walnut cabinet was most likely re-located to Munich in tandem with the von Hildebrands, since the Wittelsbacher Brunnen (an impressive Neoclassical fountain sculpture) in Lenbachplatz, which was designed by Adolf von Hildebrand, actually underwent construction in that city over the period 1893-1895. The offered lot is then listed as 'ein italienisches grosses buffet mit lowenkopfen' in an inventory, dated 18 January 1921, undertaken at the Munich estate of the von Hildebrands following Adolf's death. It re-appears in the will of Irene Georgii, recorded as 'I grosses alt italienisches buffet mit lowenkopfen, Renaissance, sehr wert voll', forming part of a 1936 inventory produced in Kleinhohenrain.Thereafter, this Italian late Renaissance low cabinet passed by descent within the same family. Irene Georgii bequeathed it to her daughter, Maria, whose surname after marriage changed to Wetzel. Subsequently Maria's son, Johannes Wetzel, inherited this piece following her death in 1990.Remarkably the previous owner, Dr Johannes Wetzel, is the grandson of Irene Georgii and thus by extension the great grandson of Adolf von Hildebrand.ComparablesA late Renaissance walnut credenza, which is dated 1550-1600, forms part of the Victoria and Albert Collection, No. 1375:1-1904, http://collections.vam.ac.uk. As with the present example this closely related piece was probably made in Tuscany. They share numerous characteristics in common which include; conforming stop-fluted Tuscan pilasters; a virtually identical drawer and door configuration; similar bead-and-reel moulded panelling and fluted scrolled corbel angles; related low relief entrelac or guilloche frieze decoration; while their plinth bases and lion paw feet are also very alike.Nonetheless, there is an interesting and potentially important variation between these two models, as is to be expected. Unlike the rather plain turned roundel door handles evident on the Victoria and Albert model, the present low cabinet incorporates two highly characterful and beautifully carved large lion masks. These appear to be a rare feature on credenzas of this type and possibly allude to some crest device or coat of arms element, perhaps in reference to the original family who commissioned it for their home. For a further, albeit slightly plainer, comparable see G. Chiesa, Il Cinquecento, 1972, Milan, fig. 25, p. 30. Adolf von HildebrandHildebrand, who worked predominantly in the Neoclassical style, first learned sculpture at the Fine Arts Academy of Nuremberg before being taught by Kaspar von Zumbusch at the Munich Academy, and then finally studying under Rudolf Siemering in Berlin. By 1873 Adolf had moved to Florence where he resided, as previously mentioned, at a former Franciscan monastery which had been founded during the 16th century. In the same year, the sculptor assisted his friend Hans von Marees (1837-1887) by designing the architectural framework for von Marees' painted murals housed in the library of the German Marine Zoological Institute, located in Naples.Although officially resident in Italy during the period 1873-1897, it is clear that from 1890 von Hildebrand lived mostly in Munich, since the vast majority of works he was commissioned to make from that time onwards were in Germany. Despite the fact that during his life the sculptor produced a total of five impressive and immense fountains, he is arguably principally renowned for the Wittelsbacher Brunnen and the Bismarck monument, Bremen, the latter of which was completed before 1910. In his Das Problem der Form in der Bildenden Kunst ('The Problem of Form in Painting and Sculpture'), which was published in 1893, von Hildebrand espoused the aesthetic autonomy of sculpture from painting. And this ideal or doctrine essentially formed the basis for most 20th century sculptural movements and consequently it is now justly considered of major importance. In 1904 Hildebrand received his ennoblement from the King of Bavaria, www.britannica.com & en.wikipedia.orgThis lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TPTP Lot will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. c.1950 Derny 98cc Tandem MopedRegistration no. not UK registeredFrame no. none visibleEngine no. 368468The name Derny is forever associated with the motorised bicycle used for motor-paced cycling events such as six-day and Keirin racing. The Derny was originally produced by the eponymous French company, but the name is now applied to all such pacing bicycles, regardless of manufacturer. The first Derny was built in 1938 by Roger Derny et Fils of Avenue de St Mandé, Paris. Derny also built a touring version called the Solo, as well as tandems and mopeds. The firm closed in 1957. Carrying the Paris registration '6957 X-75', this Derny tandem moped is powered by a 98cc two-stroke engine supplied by the Swiss Zürcher company and has, in effect, two transmission systems: a two-speed gear on the motor and a three-speed derailleur on the rear wheel. Offered from the National Motorcycle Museum Collection c.1904/1905 National 4hp TricarRegistration no. not registeredFrame no. 7441Engine no. 723•Built by one of Britain's most obscure motor manufacturers•MMC engine; two-speed transmission•An older restoration•Ultra-rare survivorIn existence for barely two years - 1904 to circa 1905 – the National Motor Company of Manchester has to be one of Britain's most obscure motor manufacturers; indeed, its entry in The Beaulieu Encyclopedia of the Automobile runs to only 70 words! According to the Encyclopedia, National's sole product, a wheel-steered tricar, was designed by two members of the Manchester Motor Club. It was powered by a 4hp single-cylinder water-cooled engine supplied by MMC, which drove via a two-speed transmission with direct-drive top gear. Seating was tandem in arrangement, with the driver at the rear and positioned higher than his passenger. The front seat could be removed, and a tradesman's van body fitted in its place, and the machine could also be used as a solo. How many of these National tricars were built and how many survive is not known, though it must be very few in either case. A truly wonderful example of Edwardian-era automotive engineering, this magnificent machine is a nicely patinated older restoration, boasting beautiful brass and copper details wherever one looks. Noteworthy features include a 'serpent' bulb horn; Zenith carburettor; 'Rotherham Coventry' fuel tank cap; and Imperial Carriage lighting. There are no documents with this Lot. We would advise the new owner to submit a full dating application to the SMCC and VCC Dating Committees so that the vehicle can be fully researched. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
