BANKSY (BRITISH, b. 1974-), PAIR OF CUT & RUN EXHIBITION POSTERS, 2023 pair of posters from the 2023 Banksy Cut & Run Exhibition, purchased from Glasgow's Gallery of Modern Art at the time of the exhibition, new, unframed and still in original wrapper (images are just for reference)The anonymous graffiti artist known as Banksy is perhaps the most controversial street artist of today. He is famous for his stenciled graffiti works, which appear in public spaces around the world. His use of stenciling developed from a need to complete a work quickly, namely to avoid being caught vandalizing by police. Between 15th June and 28th August 2023 at the Gallery of Modern Art in Glasgow he held his first show in 14 years: Cut & Run featuring stencils and more from his career on the street. “I’ve kept these stencils hidden away for years, mindful they could be used as evidence in a charge of criminal damage. But that moment seems to have passed, so now I’m exhibiting them in a gallery as works of art. I’m not sure which is the greater crime” each poster approximately 42cm x 30cm

Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881-1973) Avant Garde, Picasso's Erotic Gravures #8 - by Editor Ralph Ginzburg First Edition; First Printing. Softcover. 28cm x 28cm (11" x 11") Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881-1973) is known as the founder of Cubism. He was born in Málaga in 1881 to an artist father. The family moved to Barcelona in 1895, where Picasso enrolled at the School of Fine Arts. In the beginning of 1901, Picasso moved to Paris for the first time. The city was considered the cultural capital of Europe and attracted many aspiring artists. Soon after, he made his first sale with art dealer Berthe Weill and quickly became an influential figure in the artistic circles of Montmartre. After working in his characteristic Blue Period of 1901‒4 (as seen in Motherhood (1901)), Picasso developed his famous Cubist style in 1906/7. Together with French artist Georges Braque, Picasso extended the technique to Analytical Cubism and Synthetic Cubism (as seen in Fruit Dish, Bottle and Violin (1914)). Picasso was extremely productive during his lifetime, expanding his oeuvre to include etching, sculpture and ceramics. The Spanish artist had a profound influence on the formation of 20th-century Avant-garde art and his works can be found in many notable modern art collections around the world.

His eclectic subjects included everything from self-portraits to Parisian café scenes, nudes, and cats. Converting to Catholicism later in life, his work took a spiritual turn, culminating in his design of the Foujita Chapel in Reims.

David Shrigley (British, b. 1968) Untitled (SOME OF MY BEST FRIENDS ARE PIGS) - One of the Four Animal series , 2019 Lithograph prints on paper 2020 Printed by Narayana Press, Published by ShrigShop, Copenhagen Unsigned and unframed 80 x 60cm (31 1/2 x 23 5/8") David Shrigley was born in 1968 in Macclesfield, UK. He lives and works in Brighton and Devon, UK. In January 2020 the artist was awarded the decoration of Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire or OBE. His digital animations such as ‘Headless Drummer’ and ‘The Artist’ demonstrate what Shrigley calls ‘the economy of telling stories’, delivering a deftly crafted mix of dark and light through the simplest of forms. In his sculptural works, rendered in materials such as bronze and ceramic, the artist makes physical some of his more curious and eccentric propositions by transforming found objects or by playing with their scale. Taking Lewis Carroll's perspective of Wonderland, Shrigley enlarges objects and imbues them with curious proportions. Shrigley was a Turner Prize nominee in 2013, following his major mid-career retrospective ‘Brain Activity' at the Hayward Gallery, London. In September 2016, his monumental sculpture ‘Really Good' was unveiled in Trafalgar Square, London for the Fourth Plinth Commission. Other solo museum exhibitions include those at Copenhagen Contemporary, Denmark (2020); Newstead Abbey Historic House & Gardens, Nottinghamshire, England (2019); Museo de arte Carrillo Gil, Mexico City, Mexico (2019); Art Omi, Ghent, New York, USA (2019); Spritmuseum, Stockholm, Sweden (2018); Deste Foundation Project Space, Greece (2018); Fabrica, Brighton, England (2018); Rose Art Museum, Brandeis University, Massachusetts, USA (2016); National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, Australia (2014); Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich, Germany (2014); Hayward Gallery, London, England touring to Yerba Beuna Centre for the Arts, San Francisco, USA (2013); Cornerhouse, Manchester, UK (2012); Mumbai Art Rooms, Mumbai, India (2012); Turku Art Museum, Turku, Finland (2011) and Bergen Kunsthall, Bergen, Norway (2009). Lin Fengmian 林风眠 (1900 - 1991) Birds and Wisteria 紫藤小鸟 Oil on canvas Signed and mounted. 80 x 60cm (31.5” x 23.5”) Lin Fengmian was a pioneer of modernism known for his brilliant hybridization of Chinese and European styles, subjects and methods. In his role as a prominent educator, Lin laid the foundation for Chinese modern art. Throughout his long and productive life, Lin absorbed a wide array of stylistic approaches into his paintings, and was one of the earliest Chinese artists to make a serious study of European modern art along with traditional ink paintings. By 1920 Lin was working as a signboard painter in Marseilles, sketching and studying French in his spare time. Lin’s work as a sign painter would help develop the steadiness and clarity of his later brushwork. Following six months of study at the School of Fine Arts in Dijon, Lin left for Paris where he studied at the École des Beaux Arts and the studio of Fernand Cormon (1845-1924). He had a highly eventful year in Germany, where he saw the works of German Expressionists and held a one-man exhibition, married his first wife, and exhibited 42 paintings in an Exhibition of Traditional and Modern Chinese Art. Soon after, with the untimely and sudden death of his wife and first-born child, the stunned Lin’s art and outlook were transformed. He remarried in 1925 and then returned to Beijing in 1926, committed to revitalizing Chinese art through education. After serving as the first principal of the National Beijing Fine Art School he founded the Hangzhou National College of Art where he taught Western style painting to students including Zao Wou-Ki, Chu Teh-Chun, and Wu Guanzhong. Lin Fengmian’s life was marked by numerous upheavals and tragedies including the destruction of may of his works during the Sino-Japanese War and Cultural Revolution. After leaving China in 1977 to reunite with family members Lin Fengmian ultimately settled in Hong Kong where he died in 1991 at the age of 90 years old. His work can be found in many museum collections including the Metropolitan Museum of New York, the Cernuschi Gallery of Asian Arts of Paris, and the Art Gallery of New South Wales. This lot is sold subject to Artists Resale Rights, details of which can be found in our Terms and Conditions.
Mario Sanzone (Italian, b. 1946) Positano Oil on canvas Signed and titled by the artist Unframed 133 x 185cm (51" x 70.5") Mario Sanzone (Italian, b.1946) attended the Fine Art Academy in his native city, where he continues to live and work. After his studies, he started and has industriously continued to take part in exhibitions, both in Italy, across Europe and the USA. Sanzone is perhaps best known for his atmospheric portrayals of the Amalfi coast, which perfectly convey the richness and atmosphere of the Mediterranean. He loves to paint the towns and cities of Europe both basking in the heat of the mid-day sun, as well as the subtle twilight effects of night. His stunning original paintings have a fascinating quality. He has taken classic Impressionism and given it a fresh, modern twist, making his style truly timeless. With his vivid palette of rich blues, greens and sparkling yellows Mario Sanzone captures the beauty of The Amalfi Coast and beyond in an extraordinary way. With twinkling lights in the distance Sanzone’s original paintings offer a unique, rarely-seen perspective of his chosen enchanting locations. Sanzone’s dazzling landscapes become increasingly abstract when viewed more closely, thanks to his amazing use of light and colour and quick brushstrokes in traditional oil paints. Sanzone has always received great acclaim from critics and the public alike, especially for his luminous palette and original technique. This lot is also sold subject to Artists Resale Rights, details of which can be found in our Terms and Conditions.

His creations are characterised by a visually impactful style, featuring a highly distinctive creative imagination. He played a key role in fostering initiatives like the embryonic magazine "Algol" in 1946. Ponç was also one of the founders, alongside Brossa and Tàpies, among others, of the Dau al Set group, which grew up around a magazine of the same name of which he was the director. He was on friendly terms with Dalí and Miró.After his first solo exhibition at the Arte de Bilbao Hall in 1946, he showcased his work in numerous European galleries. He exhibited at Staempfli in New York (1966) and the Museum of Modern Art in São Paulo, Brazil, where he resided from 1953 to 1962, having fled the Franco dictatorship. The MACBA, which holds numerous paintings, drawings, engravings, and other graphic materials by the master in its collection, notes in its artist profile that "his painting constitutes a fascinating universe populated by unique beings, ranging from grotesque and diabolical to tortured and premonitory, enabling him to explore the darkest realms of the human psyche."For further information, narrated in the first person and with a touch of irony, we recommend reading Joan Ponç's autobiography, available for download on the official website of the Associació Joan Ponç.Reference bibliography:- Associació Joan Ponç. δ Lucian Freud (1922-2011)Still Life With PlantPen and ink on paper, circa 1940-1949, sheet 247 x 180mm (9 5/8 x 7 1/8in)Provenance:James Kirkman, Lucian Freud's agent;Where acquired by the present owner;Raymond Hall, friend and model of Lucian Freud;Returned to the present owner, having been torn up by the artistLot Essay:The current owner initially came into possession of Still Life With Plant through his relationship with the modern art dealer, James Kirkman, for whom he did framing work. Forty or so years ago, Kirkman - who was Freud's agent at the time and worked closely with Frank Auerbach - sold the current owner the pen and ink drawing depicting a potted plant for a paltry £90.A few years down the line, in an attempt to scrabble together some funds for a holiday, the owner removed Still Life With Plant from the sketchbook and sold it to Raymond Hall. Also known as Raymond Jones, the buyer was one of Freud's close friends and favoured models, who sat for masterpieces such as Naked Man with Rat (1977-8, Art Gallery of Western Australia). However, upon his return from his holiday, our vendor arrived home to find a letter from Raymond explaining how he had shown the sketch to a horrified Freud, who had promptly shredded the work on the spot. Apologetically enclosed in the letter were the individual fragments of the sketch. Now back in his possession, the owner had the work restored, but the scars still reveal the work's fascinating history.δ This lot is sold subject to Artists Resale Rights, details of which can be found in our Terms and Conditions.
* ANDREW HAY (SCOTTISH b. 1944), PADDY'S MARKET oil on board, signedframedimage size 112cm x 160cm, overall size 135cm x 180cmComment: A rare auction appearance for a major painting by Andrew Hay and unquestionably the largest and most impressive example to be offered at auction, anywhere.Note: Having started to paint at the age of 39, within a year the People's Palace Museum, Glasgow had purchased ten paintings and had given Hay his first solo exhibition. Since then his works have been included in numerous public and private collections. His work deals with both narrative and nature, sometimes subverting one or the other in order to advance his artistic practise. His insistence on invention, freedom and risk affirms continuity in his aesthetic spirit. He uses a network of codes, symbols and expressive techniques which play off his collective memory and familiarity of everyday objects and culture from his childhood and juxtaposes them with present day reality. In so doing he embodies them with a new philosophical discourse. Andrew’s work now features in many significant public and private collections and is in the permanent collections of Glasgow's Kelvingrove, Gallery of Modern Art and The People's Palace.

He studied art in Brighton while in his twenties before moving to Lund in southern Sweden, where he lives with his wife and children. He exhibits regularly at the Royal Academy Summer Show, Catto Gallery and Petley Fine Art in London, Mira Godard Gallery in Canada as well as at galleries in New York and Glasgow. His work is held in numerous private and corporate collections throughout North America, the UK, Europe and Asia. Ever since his first exhibition in Brighton in 1978, Colin Fraser has worked almost exclusively in egg tempera, which has the benefit of being very long lasting, with examples over two thousand years old still in existence, and was the most widely used painting medium until the sixteenth century, when it was superseded by oils. However, it is also extraordinarily time-consuming. The painted surface must be built up layer by translucent layer, with the paint drying instantaneously and not amenable to manipulation afterwards, unlike oil paints. Although a notoriously difficult medium, it has become a firm favourite of Fraser’s, who says that the “restrictions have been paramount in helping me be more direct in my approach to the work, with the instant drying and transparency of the paint actively contributing to a higher level of spontaneity of execution”. Colin Fraser is particularly drawn to its vitality which reminds him “of the dynamism of the sun – never static, always changing”. “Observed light is usually what attracts me into the process of painting,” he says. “The surface of a work painted in tempera simply has a unique glow which cannot be imitated in other mediums”. Constructing each painting is an arduous process, each beginning with an idea or a chance observation followed by weeks of experimentation with arrangements and preparatory drawings. Many of his scenes are staged with strategic placement of chairs, diaphanous textiles and trays of fruit. He believes that the painter “chooses the content and the arrangement, and then it becomes a question of striving to achieve a particular mood”. The prestigious Catto Gallery (London) has staged highly succesful solo shows for Colin Fraser in 2015, 2017, 2019 & 2022.

She attained a degree in Geography at Glasgow University and went on to train as a teacher. France and Italy and exhibited widely, especially in Glasgow, Edinburgh, London and Newcastle. Her work appeared frequently at the Royal Scottish Academy, Royal Glasgow Institute, Paisley Art Institute annual exhibitions and at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition (London).
