In this painting, which belongs to the Italian school of the 17th century, Mary Magdalene is represented praying inside a cave, looking at the knob of essences with which she anointed Jesus' feet before his arrival to Jerusalem. The lighting is typically Baroque. It is a tenebrist light: directed, focused, it falls directly on the main points of the scene, leaving the rest in a nuanced semi-darkness and producing expressive plays of chiaroscuro and dense contrasts.

According to the Gospels, she housed and provided materially for Jesus and his disciples during their stay in Galilee, and was present at the Crucifixion.
