Measurements: 23 cm (total height) x 14.5 cm (diameter).
This glass by Le Verre Français is composed of two layers of acid-etched glass. The upper layer is superimposed on the translucent, mottled, pink-toned lower layer, characterised by the large purplish floral motifs that can be seen on its surface. Completing its serene and harmonious decoration, the lower part is decorated with matching hexagonal shapes. The piece is raised on a silver base that gives the piece even greater distinction.
In 1913, Ernest and Charles Schneider founded a glass manufacture in Épinay-sur-Seine. The firm soon acquired great fame, and by 1925 had five hundred employees, selling its pieces all over the world. However, the glass market was severely affected by the Great Depression of the 1930s, which led to the closure of the factory in 1938. Nevertheless, Schneider was the most important art glass firm in Europe from the 1920s to the 1930s. Its pieces were characterised by their unique shapes and new colours. Charles Schneider meticulously studied temperature and chemical compositions to obtain an extremely extensive palette of colours, some of them never before seen and of unprecedented strength in art glass. The so-called Tango, for example, an explosive orange, was to become the most innovative. Known as Verreries Schneider, the firm produced two production lines: Charder (a contraction of Charles Schneider) and Le Verre Français. The latter includes pieces decorated with the acid-etched cameo technique, with generally two colours of glass superimposed and a stylised floral decoration, glossy on a matt background, as seen in the piece presented here.
