English school marked by the style of JOSHUA REYNOLDS (United Kingdom, 1723-1972) and THOMAS LAWRENCE (Bristol, 1769-London, 1830), 19th century.
"Portrait of children.

It has remains of the label of the Board of Seizure.
Size: 123 x 100 cm; 145 x 123 cm (frame).
In this canvas the author captures a child portrait in which both protagonists have been immortalised with great dignity and composure, a sign of their social position. Although their physical features correspond to young children. However, despite the innocence of both, the author has psychologically captured the role of each of the characters, one of them, the younger one, holding a bunch of grapes in one of his hands, which he raises to show it to the viewer. While the older brother holds it and in turn directs it, adopting a serious and responsible posture. This psychological difference between the two characters is also reflected in their different clothing. The delicacy of the skin, warmly illuminated, and the richness of the details that can be seen in the clothing are particularly striking. Works of this type were common in the English school, which had experienced a period of splendour in child portraiture, particularly in the work of Joshua Reynolds. In these works the English artist succeeded in combining the delicacy of the infants portrayed with the responsibilities and social role that these children occupied in society.
As in the rest of Europe, portraiture became the leading genre in Spanish painting in the 19th century as a result of the new social structures that were established in the Western world during that century, embodying the ultimate expression of the transformation in the taste and mentality of the new clientele that emerged among the nobility and the wealthy gentry, who were to take the reins of history in this period.
