Circle of RAFAEL TEGEO (Caravaca de la Cruz, Murcia, 1798-Madrid, 1856)"Portrait of a Gentleman,
"Portrait of a Gentleman, c. 1820.
Oil on canvas.
It conserves its period frame.
Measurements: 52 x 43 cm; 60 x 40,5 cm (frame).
The luminosity of the flesh tones contrasts greatly with the completely dark background and the tonalities used by the artist. This feature generates a certain drama and tension in the painting, which in a way harmonises with the ideals of Romanticism. It should also be noted that both the hairstyle and the clothing indicate that this is a portrait of Romantic aesthetics, which was a period in which the genre of portraiture was of great value and interest, as Romantic ideals exalted individuality. In this case, although it is a work that maintains the tradition of portraiture, with the main figure in the centre of the scene, his bust slightly turned three-quarters of the way round, against a neutral background, the gesture of his face with his lips slightly parted, shows us an active personality that is very characteristic of the Romantic period. However, it should be noted that these characteristics are combined with an intimate and lyrical vision of the character that goes beyond purely physical representation. The precise drawing, the nuanced modelling of the flesh tones, the subtle way of working the colours and the soft lighting create a direct and sober image, with a classical influence but unmistakably modern.
Aesthetically the work is reminiscent of the painting of Rafael Tegeo Díaz (Caravaca de la Cruz, Murcia, 1798-Madrid, 1856), who trained academically at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts. In 1828 he moved to Rome, thanks to a scholarship that enabled him to study under the guidance of Benvenuti and Camuzini. His work was characterised by the depiction of mythological themes, in which he specialised, although he produced other types of painting linked to his work, such as the decoration of the Royal Palace, the Vista Alegre Palace and the Casino de la Reina. He also excelled in portrait painting, becoming a painter in his own right.
