Libation cup; Dehua, China, 18th century.Blanc de chine porcelain. It presents pitting and faults
Blanc de chine porcelain.
It presents pitting and faults in the base.
Measurements: 8 x 13 x 10,5 cm.
The 'Blanc de Chine' porcelain from Dehua stood out for the quality of its kaolin, whose white tone of great purity produced a beautiful unctuous glaze that was always respected without adulterating it with any colour, and without a doubt, this porcelain, highly valued since the Tang dynasty, was used for figures and objects of great importance. This is the case of libation cups such as the one presented here, dating from the 18th century, which served as ceremonial vessels for the sprinkling of a ritual drink as an act of offering to the deities. The liquids offered in the libations were varied, normally unmixed wine was used, although milk, honey and even pure water were also often poured in. The elegant decoration of this piece is faithful to the minimalist taste of Dehua's production, where refinement is aimed at the subtlety of the details. Following this line, in this Libation cup we find four animals whose symbolism is key in Chinese mythology to represent happiness: the crane, which symbolises eternal youth; the deer, whose name in Chinese is homonymous with "abundance" and symbolises good fortune; the dragon represents imperial power and, finally, the fish, which represents marital union and fertility.the four animals, flanked by trees, are distributed in an orderly fashion on both sides of the surface, giving it a certain organic air. The artist was inspired by natural forms when modelling the cup, which is reinforced by the irregularity of its mouth, clearly reminiscent of an inverted rhinoceros horn. The paste is completely white with a high kaolin content, which also gives it the perfect texture for its delicate moulding. A dense, smooth and very shiny glaze was applied over the paste, which covered the porcelain perfectly. Finally, the piece was fired, generally in an oxidising atmosphere to obtain that warm, ivory hue. A blanc de Chine libation cup from the same period and with a decoration very similar to the one presented here can be found in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (Inventory No. 63.148), from the John Gardner Coolidge Collection. Several examples are also in the British Museum, London (Inv. Nos. Franks.5; 1980,0728.646 and 1980,0728.649).
