Barcelona
Colonial school; Goa, circa 1860.
Circular table.
Jacaranda wood.
Measurements: 74 x 74 cm.
Table with three sculptural feet that present a carved finish of anthropomorphic character, in which the characteristics of a feline are fused with those of a fish. The three feet end in a single leg decorated with carved geometric and vegetal motifs. Finally, there is the circular top or tabletop, decorated with a carved design that is arranged concentrically around the outer perimeter and in the centre of the top. This decoration combines figurative and vegetal elements. Arranged in the form of a border or frieze, the outer area has a design consisting of vegetal ornamentation on which figures of hunters and animals, identified as indigenous to the area of India, such as the elephant, are repeated in a rhythmic manner. In the central decoration of the panel, however, the small rose window is inhabited by the presence of a bird, without human accompaniment. These scenes present an aesthetic based on horror vacui, which extends to the outside of the tabletop, as the panel has a carved floral skirt with a wavy top. This type of furniture was for centuries considered the most luxurious and valuable piece of furniture, retained in all collections and noble houses despite changes in fashion, and finally revalued in the 19th century within the context of historicism.
Goa today is one of the 29 states that, together with the seven Union Territories, form the Republic of India. However, the territory was colonised by the Portuguese in the 16th century, which led to a great deal of trade, with the Portuguese calling Goa the Golden City, which was colonised by the British in the 19th century.
