"The Summer.
Oil on panel.
It has repainting and restorations.
Measurements: 10 x 15 cm.
The oil painting presents a natural landscape, whose centre is dominated by the presence of a half-naked young woman lying on the golden hay. Although it can hardly be seen behind the young lady, there are some little love birds holding some cloth garlands over the head of the young lady. The lady holds a scythe in one of her hands, which indicates that this is a representation of the allegory of summer, represented by a woman mowing, hence the tool.
This "Allegory of Summer" has a number of details that clearly place it within the French Rococo school of the 18th century: the tones of the little angels and their presence, the fact that they can be related to the classical tradition but are not part of its main themes, the movement of the composition, and the totally inconsequential subject of the painting. It could thus be related to the well-known "Fêtes Galantes" of the period, and to works such as François Boucher's "Allegory of Music" (1764, in the National Gallery in Washington D.C.), or groups with the same theme as this painting executed by Meissen on porcelain at the same time, or the oil entitled "Winter" by Jean-Honoré Fragonard (circa 1755) in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (United States), for example.
