Novo-Hispanic School; late 17th century."Virgin of the Cave".Wood and polychrome stucco.The wood
"Virgin of the Cave".
Wood and polychrome stucco.
The wood is open.
The stucco shows wear and tear.
Measurements: 23,5 x 17,5 x 3 cm.
Naïf work in which the bust of the Virgin is represented, framed in a border of delicate flowers on a white background. The figure of the Virgin is highlighted or delimited by a golden line that surrounds the entire silhouette of the effigy of the Mother of God. Her smooth, modelled face appears serene to the viewer, she is dressed in the blue cloak and white tunic that are customary in her representation, and rays of sunlight emanate from her head, which indicate her divinity.
It is worth mentioning that during Spanish colonial rule, a mainly religious art was developed, aimed at Christianising the indigenous peoples. Local artists were modelled on Spanish works, which they followed literally in terms of type and iconography. The most frequent models were the harquebusier angels and triangular virgins, but in the early 19th century, at the time of independence and political opening up of some of the colonies, several artists began to represent a new model of painting with its own identity. Technically and stylistically, it was part of the Quito school, one of the most important colonial hotbeds of religious art in the world during the Baroque period. Indigenous and mestizo artists were trained in the workshops of the convents of the capitals.
