Andalusian or viceregal school; second half of the 17th century."The workshop of San José".Oil on
"The workshop of San José".
Oil on canvas.
It presents repainting and restorations.
Measurements: 90 x 133 cm.
The present work gathers a sacred scene in which Saint Joseph, Mary, the Child and some little angels form an image typical of the daily life. In the centre of the composition of this work in landscape format, the protagonists of the scene are arranged: Saint Joseph and the Child Jesus, situated next to a large table. The Child looks at his father with a gesture of admiration, while his father shows him a finished object, thus demonstrating his role as an educator and a close father. Next to them, on the same plane and offset to the right, is the Virgin, who is focused on her sewing. The attitudes of these three main figures form an intimate, tender and warm image, representing the ideal of the family. It is the presence of the angels in the background and the Holy Spirit in the upper right corner that indicate the religiousness of the scene. Joseph's work as a carpenter is mentioned in two of the canonical Gospels, but is further developed in an apocryphal Gospel. St. Joseph was an exemplary husband of Mary, a good father and protector of his family. His work soon established him as the acknowledged patron saint of carpenters. From the end of the 15th century onwards, the promotion of the putative father of Christ, to whom the mystics also devoted fervent devotion, became increasingly evident. Until the Counter-Reformation, the figure of St. Joseph was usually secondary to that of the Child, since no theological importance was attached to him. However, after the Council of Trent, his leading role as the protector of Jesus during his infancy and as a guide during his youth was revived, and he is depicted here as such. In contrast to the tenderness, defencelessness and candour of the infant figure, Saint Joseph is presented as the support and sustenance of the Child. Through this form of representation, the artist visually emphasises the decisive role of Jesus' putative father as his protector.
It is worth noting the great aesthetic similarity that was established between the Andalusian school and the painting of the viceroyalties. This was largely due to Seville's preponderant position as one of the most important ports in the world during the 16th and 17th centuries. Thanks to the creation of the Casa de Contratación by the Catholic Monarchs, Seville controlled voyages, especially those to the new continent. This gave rise to a rich cultural exchange.
