Military General Service 1793-1814, 9 clasps, Barrosa, Ciudad Rodrigo, Badajoz, Salamanca, Vittoria, Pyrenees, St. Sebastian, Orthes, Toulouse (E. Hotley, 95th Foot, Rifles.) fitted with silver ribbon buckle, minor marks and two small edge bruises, otherwise nicely toned, good very fine £5,000-£7,000

Provenance: Glendining’s, February 1940 and October 1954.

Elijah Hotley was born in the Parish of Long Melford, Suffolk, and attested for the Rifle Brigade at Bury St Edmunds on 11 March 1809, at the very young age of 12 years. He then served ‘Under Age’ as a Private and then Bugler from 11 March 1809, and then to Private on 10 March 1815, when he attained the age of 18 years and resumed service as a Bugler for almost another year before reverting to Private on 25 January 1816. His total service amounted to nearly 23 years with the Colours until his discharge on 10 January 1838. He served ‘Four years and three months in Portugal and Spain; Nine Months in America; Four Months in France and the remainder at Home’. He was ‘Wounded at New Orleans in the forefinger of the right hand.’ He was discharged at Portsmouth ‘in consequence of difficulty of breathing, debility of the lower limbs and being worn out.’ He declared his intention to reside and receive his pension at Long Melford, Suffolk.

If you live within the UK, items will be despatched using Royal Mail Special Delivery. This service provides parcel tracking (via the Royal Mail website) and next weekday delivery (betwen 9am and 1pm). Items delivered within the UK are covered by our insurance company. Heavy and bulky lots will be sent by courier, in discussion with the client.

Outside of the UK
If the item/s being sent are worth under £1000 in total they are sent using Royal Mail’s Signed For International service. This ensures the item must be signed for when it is delivered.
If the item/s being sent are valued at over £1000 in total they will be sent using FedEx. This service allows next day delivery to customers in many parts of the US and parcels are fully trackable using the FedEx website.
