FRANCE, L’Auto-Velo, L’Auto, 1930, an Art Déco bronze medal by V. Scobeltzine for Fraisse-Demey, male head facing, two other male heads in helmets and goggles in profile, sporting figures around, rev. map of France, date below (1933), edge impressed bronze and with foundry mark, 50mm, 46.71g (cf. Höhn e18, 4336; cf. DNW 35, 684). Good very fine, a particularly strong Déco image; in original blue fitted case [this a trifle damaged] £30-£40
---
Originally struck for the 30th anniversary of the publication L’Auto-Velo, L’Auto, the first issue of which appeared on 16 October 1900. The paper, which endured a difficult start, was responsible for introducing the Tour de France in 1903, after which its circulation soared, reaching a high point in 1933. The new ownership of the paper allied itself closely with the occupying German régime in World War II and hence was shut down in 1944
