The RMS Queen Mary, built by John Brown on Clydebank for the Cunard Line, embarked on her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York on 27 May 1936 and won the Blue Riband, for the fastest Atlantic sea crossing, that August; having lost it to the refitted SS Normandie in 1937, the prize was recaptured in 1938 and held until 1952.
