A George III silver soup tureen, of good gauge, the oval body with gadrooned rim and applied cast cartouches of ‘C’-scrolls, olive branches and leaf forms, each engraved with an armorial, with scallop and foliate handles, on outset lion mask and paw feet, the cover crested and with fixed handle and band of gadrooning, by William Bennett, London 1810, width 33cm. £3,000-£4,000 --- Provenance: The arms are those of Guise, Baronets of Highnam Court in the county of Gloucestershire. Given the date of manufacture of this tureen, it was undoubtedly in the possession of Sir Berkeley William Guise (1775 - 1834), 2nd Baronet of Highnam Court in the parish of Churcham, in the County of Gloucestershire. He was the eldest son of Sir John Guise, 1st Baronet of Highnam Court, and his wife, Elizabeth Wright. Sir Berkeley succeeded as the 2nd Baronet and to the Highnam Court estate upon his father’s death on 2 May 1794. He later inherited the estates of Elmore Court, the original and principal seat of the Guise family, and Rendcomb upon the death of his cousin, Jane Guise on 8 August 1807. Sir Berkeley was educated at Eton, and Christ Church, Oxford. He served in various offices within his home county: Verderer and Deputy Warden of the Forest of Dean from 1801 - to his death in 1834; Sheriff of the City of Gloucester, 1807, and Mayor of Gloucester in 1813. He was also commissioned as a Captain in the North Gloucestershire Militia on 8 June 1798 and later appointed as Lieutenant Colonel Commandant to command the newly raised 1st East Gloucestershire Local Militia on 14 April 1809. He was a Whig member of parliament for Gloucestershire from 1811-32 and Gloucestershire East 1832-34. Our thanks to Beacon Genealogical and Heraldic Research for assistance with this lot. Condition Report Hallmarks to base rubbed but legible, lid and handle also hallmarked. Light wear to engraved coats of arms and upper surfaces. Weight 143oz.
