VERLAINE PAUL: (1844-1894) French Poet. Considered one of the greatest in French poetry. A.N.S., P. Verlaine, one page, 5.5 x 4.5, Paris, 9th April 1891, to Mr. Vanier, in French. The document fully written and dated in Verlaine´s hand is a receipt, stating `Received from Mr. Varnier, editor, the amount of twenty francs as partial payment for My Hospitals´. Matted in black, beneath a 4 x 5.5 unsigned portrait of Verlaine showing the French poet in a head and shoulders pose, to an overall size of 8 x 12. G £400-600 Léon Vanier (1847-1896) French Bookseller and Verlaine´s Editor. Verlaine wrote Mes Hopitaux (1891) few years before passing away. During these last years Verlaine falled into drug addiction, alcoholism and poverty. He lived in slums and public hospitals, and spent his days drinking absinthe in Paris.
