COIMBRA. Diocese.- Constituições | synodaes, | Do Bispado de Coimbra.- Coymbra: per Joã da barreyra & Joã aluarez, M. D. XLVIII. [1548].- [6], ciiij f.; 32 cm.- E., First edition of the new Constitutions of the Bishopric of Coimbra, published on the initiative of Friar João Soares (1507-1572), born in Urrô (Penafiel), hermit of Saint Agustine. Friar João participated in the third session of the Council of Trent (1561/63), was confessor of King D. João III and bishop of Coimbra between 1545 and the year of his death. In addition to the constitutions of his diocese, he left us an extensive bibliography on religious themes, including commentaries on the Gospels of Matthew, Luke and Mark. At the end, the following colophon: Forã impressas as presentes cõstituyções. Na muyto nobre e sempre leal cidade de Coymbra per Joã da barreyra e Joã aluarez, empressores da vniversidade. Por maãdado do muyto yllustre & reuere[n]dissimo senhor dõ Joam Soares bispo de Coimbra conde de Arganil. E forã acabadas aos doze dias do mes de Agosto anno do nacime[n]to d[e] nosso sñor Jesu Christo de M. D. XLVIII. Very clean copy, possibly cared for, with minor restorations on the upper margin and corners, on the title page. Some notes from the period (marginalia), a little delicate and occasionally damaged by the trimming, which preserved, however, wide margins. Recent binding, with parchment spine and top edge gilt.
