RAF/RFC Ace Rupert Atkinson WWI propeller set with barometer and plaque which reads "Archie Jan 5 1917" with Bristol Propeller transfer to the blade.BiographyRupert Atkinson was born in Shanghai, China, the elder son of John Brenan Atkinson and Amelie Sophie Gould. He was educated at Orley Farm School, Harrow, and at Marlborough College, Wiltshire. He was enrolled at Pembroke College, Cambridge in June 1914, and joined the 16th (Public Schools) Battalion, Middlesex Regiment in September.On 2 December 1914 he received his commission as a temporary Second Lieutenant in the 15th Middlesex Regiment. On 28 July 1915, he was sent to Cameroon, where he was attached to the West African Frontier Force in the Kamerun Campaign. Atkinson was eventually invalided back to England, arriving at Liverpool aboard the SS Mendi on 2 April 1916.In August 1916 Atkinson joined the Royal Flying Corps, receiving Royal Aero Club Aviator's Certificate No.3646 at the military flying school at Brooklands on 28 September.He arrived at the Western Front in November 1916, joining 10 Squadron RFC. He was promoted to captain in July 1917, becoming a flight commander shortly afterwards.Atkinson was engaged in reconnaissance, night-bombing, and ground attacks, and was awarded the Military Cross on 18 October 1917. His citation reads:Temporary Captain Rupert Norman Gould Atkinson, General List and RFC.For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. This officer has done a large amount of successful artillery work, has taken part in many night bombing raids, and has continually distinguished himself by his fearlessness and determination in descending to low altitudes in order to attack hostile infantry and machine guns. On one occasion, also, he successfully attacked and drove down a hostile balloon.Between May and October 1918 while flying an Airco DH.9 and serving with 98 Squadron RAF, and later with 206 Squadron RAF, Atkinson scored five aerial victories.On 2 November 1918 he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross:Captain Rupert Norman Gould Atkinson, MC.A gallant and determined officer whose services over the lines since May last in long-distance and photographic reconnaissances, and as leader of bomb raids, have been of a very high order. On a recent occasion, when on solitary photographic reconnaissance at 15,000 feet, his machine was attacked by eight Fokker biplanes; one of these he shot down.After the end of hostilities he served with the occupation forces in Cologne, Germany, in 90 Squadron RAF.On 7 March 1919, while at home on leave, Atkinson died from pneumonia following influenza. Notices to Buyers
1. Bidding in person: Bidders must register at our office prior to the commencement of the sale to receive their individual paddle number. Please signal to the Auctioneer that you are bidding by clearly raising your hand, catalogue or paddle number.
2. Commision Bids: Commission Bids are accepted at the sender’s risk and without legal obligation. Bids must be left with the Auctioneer by 4.00pm the day before the sale. We accept bids left in person, by post, telephone or e-mail. Proof of identification or a deposit may be requested before a bid is accepted. Commission bids are carried out free of charge and lots will be bought for you as cheaply as is allowed by competing bids or reserves already on our books. Bids are subject to the Standard Conditions of Sale which are on display in the showroom and available on request.
3. Payment: Payment must be received within 3 days of the sale and may be made in cash, cheque, bank transfer, debit card or credit card (2% plus VAT charge). Payments by cheque will delay the delivery of your purchase until funds are cleared. If you have registered to bid live online, payment will be taken from your registered debit or credit card 72 hours after the auction unless alternative contact is made within this period. 4. Collection: Unless otherwise arranged, all lots must be collected within 3 days of the sale. Goods left on our premises – whether paid for or not – for more than 3 days after the date of the sale will be charged £10 + VAT per lot per day & shall be payable to Boningtons. This applies to all types of objects whether big or small. In the event of storage charges accrued becoming in excess of the invoice total of the item(s), possession of the item(s) will revert to Boningtons and storage charges in excess of the invoice total will become payable to Boningtons.
5. Shipping: Boningtons are unable to pack and post the items offered in our auctions. Please contact us for further information regarding the delivery/shipping companies used by our clients or see the additional sale information.
6. Estimates and Descriptions: The condition of items is not given in the catalogue. Buyers must satisfy themselves as to the condition of lots. We attempt to mention major restorations and alterations. The estimated selling price is a guide for the buyer, but is not to be taken as definitive. Dimensions are given height before width. Purchasers are advised to take their own measurements to guard against any unseen catalogue error. We recommend that the buyer ask our specialists for further and better particulars of lots.
