MILITARY & GAME HUNTING - MANUSCRIPTS Collection of six journals and notebooks, manuscript and typed, relating to the second Boer War, the Becuanaland Campaign, and game hunting, comprising: Manuscript notebook titled 'Extracts from Oliver's letters written from South Africa during the Boer War', '...I was tucked away safely behind big rock & it was very amusing to hear the bullets whistling over ones head...', 136 pages, marbled boards, worn, 8vo, 19 January 1900 to 30 August 1900; Manuscript transcriptions of letters home from Richard P. Butler, Boer War, c.235 numbered pages, 4to, 16 March 1901 to 16 June 1902; Letters of Lt. R.W.D. ('Douglas') Phillips, 22 Co., 2nd Battalion, Imperial Yeomanry, transcribed and typed into a journal, from the Boer War, c.62 leaves, typed on versos only, red half calf, titled 'South Africa/ 1900', 4to, 1900; Typed manuscript journal titled 'Bully Beef & Biscuit or Methuen's Horse in Becuanaland by Lort Mansel-Dakyns, late Sergeant, 1st M.R.' , a personal account of the Bechuanaland Campaign, 140 numbered leaves, typed versos only, half calf, title in gilt on upper cover, 4to, [1885]; Manuscript account of his part in the second Boer War by Rifleman Andrew Thom, 2nd Battalion, King's Royal Rifle Corps, transcribed from his diaries, his regiment arriving from Calcutta in October 1899, life in camp and action seen, etc., 325 numbered pages, half calf, worn, spine missing, 8vo, [c.1912]; Manuscript journal of John Donaldson Reeves with ownership inscription and date '8th March 1867', describing the voyage to South Africa, travels in Natal and Transvaal, visit to 'Ketchwayo' who '...sent for us about 12 saying that he did not send before as he knew 'the white man did not like to walk before the day was hot'... left... heartily glad to get rid of the scoundrel and his begging set of attendants...', discussing missionaries, the countryside and people, at camp, hunting (including encounter with a buffalo '...the ugliest, toughest and most dangerous looking creature imaginable...'), and much else, various financial accounts and notes at rear, two permits loosely tipped in, c.150 leaves, additional blanks, later entries reversed, original maroon calf, worn, 4to, 9 March to 29 September 1867 (6) This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: • • Zero rated for VAT, no VAT will be added to the Hammer Price or the Buyer's Premium.
