SALM, A. Java. J.C. Greive. Amst., F. Buffa & Zn., (1865-72). W. title-p. printed in black and red and 24 chromolithogr. plates, partly finished by hand, hinged to mounts and loose as issued, each mount captioned w. a printed ticket in the outer right lower corner. Lge-fol. Ocl. clamshell portfol. w. ties, front side titled in gold. (Old mounts replaced by high (museum) standard acid free cardboard (0,5 mm), plates and separate tickets mounted w. dextrine, title-p. and plates a bit foxed in places, but a superb copy w. short conservation report by Floor Meijboom). NOTE:Abram Salm (1801-1876), tobacco planter, spent twenty-nine years in Indonesia and was a self-taught draughtsman and painter of numerous landscapes in Java, 24 of which were copied by the painter and lithographer J.C. Greive (1837-1891), at the request of the publisher Frans Buffa. The quality and finish of the plates in 'Java' is generally held to be Greive's and Buffa's greatest effort, and thus represent some of the finest 19th c. lithographic book illustrations to have been published in the Netherlands. Moreover Salm depicted landscapes which had scarcely before been depicted in topographical prints of Indonesia. Two versions of this work exist: tinted and coloured with hand finishing; this being a copy with hand finishing. The size of the plates vary slightly, but they are c. 360 x 265 mm each: 1. "t Land Tjitrap'; 2. 'De Vulkaan de Smeroe. Genomen uit de Residentie Passourouang'; 3. 'Waterval Singahan (Residentie Rembang)'; 4. 'Suikerfabriek Pangka (Residentie Tagal)'; 5. - Bastin & Brommer, p. 44-45 and note 659; Landwehr, Dutch Books w. Cold. Plates, 421.

  7. Any item which does not meet the description in this catalogue, may be returned within two weeks after receipt. This guarantee does not cover lots of more than three books or prints, or lots indicated as "Sold w.a.f. (with all faults), not subject to return". If purchasers are prevented from attending the sale personally, the auctioneer will gladly undertake to execute their bids without any charge. Limitless bids are not accepted. Shipping and handling are at the risk and expense of the buyer. Prints will be shipped without glass.
  8. The Resale Right Act may apply to lots containing original works of art by living artists or by artists up to 70 years after their death with a yield of € 3,000 including premium and VAT. Up to € 50,000, this percentage is currently 4% of the hammer price plus premium.
