A George III silver pint mug, inset with coins from the Jacobean silver hoard found in Deighton in 1847, the mug decorated with two bands of reeding, the sides inset with three shillings and three sixpences of Elizabeth and James I, inscribed to the rim and base: ‘coins found on the farm occupied by mr. john richardson at deighton,/ and presented to him by his landlord lord wenlock. august 1847’, maker’s mark IW, London circa 1820, together with a Victoria silver waiter, centred with engraved initials ‘IEH’ enclosed within a circular foliate engraved and beaded border and mounted with sixteen Elizabeth and James I shillings, inscribed to the underside: ‘this waiter weighing 17oz 14dwts was made to receive 16 old coins of unknown assay’, the waiter raised on three claw feet, by Samuel Roberts & Charles Beck, Sheffield 1869, mug height 10.1cm, waiter diameter 25cm, both contained in later fitted presentation case. £1,200-£1,400 --- Provenance: The original hoard was found by workmen digging a new foundation at Deighton, four miles from York, and comprised 348 coins as follows: 42 Mary groats; 18 Philip and Mary groats; Elizabeth I, shillings 55; sixpences 134; groats 24; James I shillings 49; sixpences 26. The latest coin dated to 1613. The Yorkshire Museum received 57 coins, with the rest of the hoard being melted down. Ex Sworders, 20 May 2014, lot 158. The silver mug has inset James I shillings: obverse 4th bust mm Rose; reverse mm lis. Sixpences: reverse 1604 mm Lis; reverse 1603, mm Rose; Elizabeth I shilling: obverse mm Bell; sixpence 1567 mm Coronet. The silver waiter is mounted with James I shillings: obverse 3rd bust mm Rose (3); 4th bust mm Rose; 5th bust mm Key (2); Elizabeth I shillings: obverse mm Woolpack (2) mm Tun (2); mm Key; mm Scallop; mm Martlet; mm 2; mm not visible (2).
