Werner Büttner (b. 1954)
Until 1977, Werner Büttner studied law in Berlin, but then moved to Hamburg, where in collaboration with Martin Kippenberger and the brothers Albert and Markus Oehlen actions and exhibition concepts originated. A return to expressive painting in a deliberately calculated dilettantism, irony, wit and cynical provocation are characteristic of the artist's works, who thus became a main representative of Neue Wilde. Since 1989, Werner Büttner has been a professor of painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Hamburg.
Albert Oehlen (b. 1954)
Albert Oehlen was born in Krefeld as a son of a graphic designer. From 1970 to 1973 he served an apprenticeship as a publisher, which was followed from 1974 to 1981 by studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Hamburg. His teachers were Sigmar Polke and Claus Böhmler. In 1976 he founded together with Werner Büttner the ‘League to combat contradictory behavior’ whose central organ ‘Dum Dum" he edited until 1979. Oehlen produced jointly with his brother Mark, Martin Kippenberger, Werner Büttner and AR Penck records and participated in anarchist-ironic actions. Oehlen's paintings of the 1980s, which he himself described as ‘postungegenständlich’ (post non-objective), is characterized by ironic satirized subject and combines abstraction with figurative elements. In the 1990s he worked on computer graphics. From 2000 to 2009 Oehlen was a professor at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf. (fea)

Werner Büttner (geb. 1954)
