Juli 1987) in der Old Forge Gallery in Elstead, Surrey. "Head with a Conscience" war die Nr. 56 im Ausstellungskatalog, der diesem Los beiliegt. - Referenzen: https://www.janzalud.co.uk; Andrea Robertson, "Museum of Automata", S. 76 (ähnliches Stück), Nr. 79. Watch and Listen on:Youtube.com/AuctionTeamBreker Start Price: EUR 2000 Zustand: (3/3)Les Valseurs Musical Automaton by Alexandre Théroude, c. 1850Depicting a waltzing couple, with wax-coated papier-mâché heads, glass eyes and original hair wigs, original silk costumes edged in lace (the lady) and soutache trim (the gentleman), on conical green grain-painted metal base with three spoked wheels, two brass plaques: "A. Theroude, Paris" and "Breveté, S.G.D.G.", going-barrel motor and single-air cylinder movement, ht. 12 ½ in. (31.5 cm), original working condition, with wood-handled crank. Included are a modern glass dome and presentation base. - Note: An ingeniously designed mechanical toy, the movement of Théroude’s waltzing couple is achieved by a pair of driving wheels and a smaller steering wheel, fixed at an angle, that create the circular trajectory of the base. A second axle at the lady’s waist causes the couple to twirl around and around in imitation of a lively dance. - Literature: Christian Bailly, "Automata, the Golden Age", p. 35, for a similar piece. Lot 279

Watch and Listen on:Youtube.com/AuctionTeamBreker Start Price: EUR 6000 Zustand: (3/3)Rare "Grimatiscope" Binocular Viewer, c. 1870Jules Duboscq, Paris. Patented French binocular viewer for creating distorted images from photographs, with spring motor (working well) and aspherical lens, ht. 5 in., with signed fixed image, two screws on reverse without caps, key present, in working order. - Note: Named after the Greek word "grimatsa" (French "grimace" or English "grin"), this extremely rare viewer is a precursor of the so-called "Photographic Transformists" described by Louis Ducos du Hauron in 1889. A carte-de-visite (with a head as large as possible) is inserted into the back while a rotating aspherical lens transforms the photo of approx. 64 x 64 mm into an amusing distortion. The effect can be heightened by moving the overlapping part of the photograph by hand. The viewer, one of only three examples we know of, was a reaction to the enormous success of the development of the carte-de-visite format by Disdéri. - Literature: Aaron Scharf, "Art and Photography", 1975, p. 233 ff.; Paul Wing, "Stereoscopes", 1996. - The C.d.V. shown here is for demonstration purposes only. - Literatur: Andrea Robertson, 1992, "Museum of Automata", S. 78. (165 cm), working. - Literature: Andrea Robertson, 1992, "Museum of Automata", p. 78. - Robertson cites Mills: "I started making steel automata at college in 1980 and by 1985 had slowly moved into semi-functional furniture. A delight with making things that work (to nobody’s criteria other than my own), combined with childhood memories of the smells in my Dad’s metal-pressing factory, are probably both contributory factors in my work". - Literatur: Andrea Robertson, 1992, "Museum of Automata", S. 73; Frank Nelson, "Rude Mechanicals, a Moving Experience", siehe unter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVLrzu95IaI. (36 cm), good working condition, small paint rub above tiger’s left eye. Included are the program from a summer show by Frank Nelson at the Serpentine Gallery and a postcard of a similar piece. - Note: The tamer cracks his whip once and asks the tiger to perform his trick. The tiger rotates his tail, shakes his head and refuses. The tamer cracks his whip twice but the tiger still refuses. The tiger cracks his whip thrice, the tiger at last agrees, nods, turns around and places his head in the tamer’s mouth. - Produced in an edition of ten, "The Tamer" was created during Nelson’s early career. He describes it as quite an old piece but one of the best ideas he had ever had. "If you could put a twist in the tail, all was for the better." - Literature: Andrea Robertson, 1992, "Museum of Automata", p. 73; Frank Nelson, "Rude Mechanicals, a Moving Experience", please see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVLrzu95IaI. - Referenzen: Frank Nelson, "Rude Mechanicals, a Moving Experience"/https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVLrzu95IaI; The Music Box, MBSGB, Vol. 14, No. 6 (Sommer 1990), S. 159-162. No! Support her head on a pole like so!", combined ht. of figures 37 in. (94 cm), total ht. 75 in. (195 cm), split in wood on Thatcher’s shoulder, working, with European plug, a safety check of electrical functions strongly recommended. Included is a framed montage of Nelson’s working sketches. - Note: The poor man moves his arms in and out to display his empty pockets, the rich man’s pockets open to reveal his overflowing wealth (pocket movement inactive) while Thatcher beats her fist until, with a look of horror, her severed head rises on a pole. - When the British Conservative government under Margaret Thatcher announced its green paper on poll tax in 1986, Nelson was living in a cottage with rates of less than £ 100 a year. The legislation would create a 650 % tax increase for him overnight. He comments: "So we have Maggie, who supports herself on the rich man, who supports himself by sticking his Guccis into the poor man’s ears". - The automaton offered here was one of two on display at the Museum of Automata in York. - References: The Music Box, MBSGB, Vol. 14, No. 6 (Summer 1990), pp. 159-162; Frank Nelson, "Rude Mechanicals, a Moving Experience", please see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVLrzu95IaI. Vichy, Paris, 5 Articles Français, Marque Deposé, Modele Deposé", the torso containing going-barrel motor and two-air cylinder movement, in gold silk costume with metallic embroidery, headdress and the original coin decoration, ht. 20 in. (51 cm) including headdress, with acorn-form stop / start and modern key, surface of face restored, good working and playing condition. - Note: Part of a series of Vichy automata reminiscent of the polychrome-painted bronze busts by French artists such as Émile Guillemin and Charles Cordier. The impression of an animated sculpture is heightened by the graceful modelling of the face and hands and the slender plinth base in imitation of its bronze counterparts. From the choice of subject, to the style of costume and the instrument she plays, the automaton was influenced by a 19th century fascination with 'exoticism' that reflected African cultures through a European lens. - The musician turns and gently bows her head to the left and right, blinks and appears to play the instrument with a lifting and plucking motion of the right arm. - This example has been sympathetically restored by David Secrett and Margaret Glover. - Literature: Q. David Bowers, Encyclopedia of Automatic Musical Instruments, p. 80, for an identical piece, one of several French automata in the catalog of retailer Gustav Uhlig of Halle, Saxony. Dez. 1995; Andrea Robertson, "Museum of Automata", S. 38. The automaton was not illustrated in the Vichy catalog and surviving examples are exceedingly rare.
