A good Second War ‘Burma operations’ M.C. group of five awarded to Jemadar Sultan Ali, 4th (Sikh) Battalion, 12th Frontier Force Regiment, Indian Army, for his gallantry in leading an attack on a heavily enemy occupied village on 25 March 1945 Pakistan Independence Medal 1947 (PJO 16092 Jem Sultan Ali 12 F.F.R.); Military Cross, G.VI.R. reverse officially dated 1946; 1939-45 Star; Burma Star; War Medal 1939-45, mounted court-style as worn in this order, very fine (5) £1,000-£1,400 --- M.C. London Gazette 2 August 1945: ‘In recognition of gallant and distinguished services in Burma.’ The original Recommendation, for an Immediate award, states: ‘On 25 March 1945 Subedar Sultan Ali was the commander of No. 7 Platoon, C Company, ordered to attack and clear the village of Kyigon (Map Meiktila sheet 1:25000, Square 3134). The company went in with No 7 Platoon as a spear head, as the degree of enemy resistance was at this time was not known, and had to be ascertained. A troop of tanks was in support, but took no part in the first phase of the attack, and remained behind, outside the village. On entering the village Subedar Sultan Ali’s platoon soon came under fire from Japs in the trenches and fox-holes in the vicinity of the Pagodas to their front. By skilful manoeuvring of his sections Subedar Sultan Ali soon overcame this opposition, about one section strong, and destroyed the enemy. He them continued his advance into the village, and came under automatic fire from strong bunker to his front, and heavy sniping from both flanks. The platoon was pinned down, and almost at once the enemy begun to shell the position from close range, with great accuracy, and casualties to the platoon begun to mount. A lesser man might have withdrawn his platoon from such a predicament, and gone in again with tank support, but Subedar Sultan Ali at once decided that the solution lay in a swift and determined attack to destroy the enemy and occupy his trenches. This he did, and under his inspiring leadership his platoon went in and at the point of bayonet, destroyed the enemy, and occupied his position. Subedar Sultan Ali was badly wounded by a shell splinter in the stomach before reaching the enemy position, but continued to direct his platoon and shout encouragement, until the enemy were destroyed and the men under cover. Not till then did he allow himself to be dragged away and evacuated. The platoon suffered 2 killed and 9 wounded in the action, but secured a firm base in the centre of the enemy resistance, and it was from here that the further operations of the Company were launched, with the tank support, and the village completely cleared, in spite of constant shelling. Kyigon was not again occupied after our men were withdrawn in the evening. This Subedar has shown determination and skilled leadership of the highest order, and his courage has inspired his men to give of their utmost throughout the recent operations.’ Sultan Ali was born in the district of Rawalpindi and attested for the 12th Frontier Force Regiment, Indian Army, on 21 June 1930. He served with them during the Second World War in Burma from 9 December 1941 to 20 May 1942; in Assam from May to August 1942; ands again in Burma from 5 February 1945. He was pensioned on 21 June 1958, after 28 years’ service. Sold with copied service records and a photographic image of the recipient.

Lot 20

A BRUSSELS HISTORICAL TAPESTRY FROM THE LIFE OF ALEXANDER THE GREAT LATE 17TH CENTURY Alexander the Great astride Bucephalus, trampling his enemies, with foreground of water's edge, soldiers on the riverbanks in the middle distance with war elephants to the left, with a hilltop citadel in the distance, within elaborate architectural border with ribbons, floral swags and winged cherubic figures and central cartouche to each edge, small unidentified weaver's mark to lower left side guard border approximately 345 x 524cm The most important and probably influential series of scenes from the life of Alexander was originally designed by Charles le Brun between 1660 and 1673 for Louis XIV, and initially woven by the King's weavers at the Royal Tapestry of Les Gobelins. The Alexander series was the first major new tapestry commission of Louis XIV's reign, and the tapestries were designed to flatter the king by comparing his virtues and achievements to those of Alexander the Great. The success of the designs led to other versions being produced by weavers such as the Aubusson factories, Judocus de Vos, and the Felletin weavers in the region of Le Marche. The use of Alexander as a suitable subject matter pre-dates le Brun's designs however and by the end of the 17th century onwards, factories took to producing their own versions, interpolating elements from earlier designs with le Brun's iconography to produce new scenes from his life. It would seem that this tapestry is one such example of this type. It draws on elements from various sources which depict one of two significant successful battles in his life; either the Battle of Granicus in 334BC, or the Battle of Gaugamela in 331BC. The first is suggested by the river setting, the second by the war elephants and the broader landscape- both details recorded in Plutarch's Life of Alexander. It is probable that the weaver's design is drawn, in part, from a set executed by the workshop of Karel van Mander the Younger (1579-1623) in the early 17th century. One such panel is held in the Art Institute of Chicago collection and depicts "The Crossing of the Granicus" (1911.439). It is possible that the fortified buildings on the mountain in the distance and Alexander's horses pose are directly influenced by this panel. In overall style and with distinctive cherub pillar supports flanking swags to the main borders, it is perhaps from the workshop that produced the Flemish 17th century tapestry attributed to the Van Maelsack Atelier Bruxelles and which depicted Alexander the Great astride Bucephalus, sold Bonham's London, Fine Decorative Arts, 1200-1900, 18 December 2020, lot 29. Interestingly it also carried a similar atelier symbol to the left hand guard. Condition Report: There is evidence of cuts and mis-joins to sections of main border- this together with the abrupt ending of spear to the sky has raised discussion as to whether this may originally have been slightly larger in size overall.Fading and discolouration throughout but retaining some of the more fragile paler colours. Looks to have been through various stages of remedial repair and restorations- some more modern and refined than others. Some of the repair colours have denatured at a different rate from the main piece. Later backing for better overall hanging stability and conservation. Some loose threads and open gaps which may benefit from further small repairs. Some creasing and fold marks. Please see additional images for visual references to condition which form part of this condition report. All lots are available for inspection and Condition Reports are available on request. However, all lots are of an age and type which means that they may not be in perfect condition and should be viewed by prospective bidders; please refer to Condition 6 of the Conditions of Business for Buyers. • LIONEL BULMER (BRITISH 1919-1992) Lionel Bulmer (lots 159-166) Introduction Lionel Bulmer’s coastal views of summer on the Suffolk coast came to define his career. His impressionistic style was ideally suited to evoking the realism of a hot summers day on the sand dunes. The critic Ian Collins noted of Bulmer’s work: ‘the season appears to be one of permanent summer.’The son of an architect, Bulmer's studies at Clapham School of Art were interrupted by being conscripted at the outbreak of the Second World War. On being de-mobbed he studied at the Royal College of Art, at that time relocated in Ambleside in the Lake District, where he met fellow artist and life partner to be Margaret Green. When the RCA returned to Kensington Bulmer and Green were taught by, among others, Ruskin Spear and Carel Weight. When Green received an RCA travel scholarship the couple embarked on a tour of discovery, painting their way through France and Italy for the best part of a year. On their return to London they settled in Chelsea, Bulmer taught at Kingston School of Art while Green taught at Walthamstow School of Art and they both exhibited at the Royal Academy and New English Art Club. Tiring of the austerity and smog of post-war London they sought out life in the countryside. Initially they lived above a boat house in Littlehampton, on the Sussex coast (lot 163), but soon moved to an ancient thatched cottage surrounded by run down gardens, near Stowmarket in rural Suffolk, which they lovingly restored and transformed over many years. From there they set out on their frequent painting expeditions to the coastal communities of Southwold and Walberswick.Untouched by heavy industry, the area represented a rural coastal idyll that was to become the central motif of Bulmer’s work (lot 159). Popular since the 18th century as a destination for seawater swimming, and following in the footsteps of the painter Philip Wilson Steer (1860-1942), Bulmer was drawn to recording beach scenes and bathers (lots 164 & 165). Steer had made the East Coast his painting ground after returning from studying on the Continent and brought Impressionist painting to England. Bulmer’s pointillist style reflects both Steer's influence and also more directly that of the Neo-Impressionists, Georges Seurat (1859-1891) in particular. 159LIONEL BULMER (BRITISH 1919-1992)CYCLING OVER SOUTHWOLD BRIDGEsigned L Bulmer lower left oil on board 30 x 30 cm; 11 3/4 x 11 3/4in (unframed)
