The chain is intact. The watch glass is missing. Steeled hands are a little tarnished. Case fully marked, including outer case. Mentioned in Lord Hawkesbury's Catalogues of Portraits at Compton Place and at Buxted Park, in Sussex, 1903, p. 25, no. 8, at Buxted Park, as in the 'Billiard Room'. In a gilt foliate frame. The watercolour is generally in good condition, with some fading, foxing and spotting. Some losses and further damage to the gilt foliate frame.

A mid-18th century 30-hour weight-driven longcase clock by Giles Bennett of Malmesbury - the bell-strike movement with four knopped pillars, fronted by a square brass dial signed to the Roman chapter ring and engraved to the centre with flowers, foliage and a seated squirrel 'seated' on the chamfered date aperture, an Arabic subsidiary dial at 12, with gilt-brass floral and leafy scroll spandrels, with a single lead weight and brass and lead pendulum, the oak case with ogee moulded caddy top on parcel-gilt three-quarter columns, over a plain trunk and base with later stained pine bracket foot plinth, probably reduced in height, 206 cm high. * Giles Bennett is recorded in G H Baillie, 'Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World' as working in Malmesbury from 1752 to 1766.

Hieronymus Cock - View Of Colosseum - 3 / Description: Colossaei Ro.[mani] prospectus 3 (Colosseum prospect 3) This etching shows a section of the Colosseum. At the time as he was publishing his first series of ruins in Antwerp, Cock was also publishing maps. The inscription "PROSPECTUS" alerts beholders that the image is a view, rather than a plan. . From : Roman Antiquities, from a series of 24 numbered and lettered etchings +title engraved and published by Hieronymus Cock: Praecipua aliquot Romanae antiquitatis ruinarum monimenta, vivis prospectibus, ad veri imitationem affabre designata In florentiss.[ima] Antuerpia per Hiro.[nymus] Coc[k]. Mense Maio, Anno M.D.LI. Cum caesa privilegio ad VIII an / Dimensions: 24,60 x 34,00 cm / Condition: Very good early impression on laid paper with a heraldic shield watermark. Full plate border and one centimeter margins. Flattened middle fold slightly teared in on top, invisibly closed; some other small closed tears in the margin, at left corners with small paper loss of margin corner. Overall good and inside plate border very good condition. Very enjoyable impression. / Literature: Cock journeyed to Rome between 1546-8 intending to study antique sculpture, but became fascinated with the Palatine monuments, mounting expeditions to the Colosseum and the Baths of Diocletian. The drawings for several prints, survives a.o. now in Edinburgh, and were likely executed by Cock on the spot. As the other etchings from this early series, it was etched by Cock himself in the first years after his return from Rome in 1548. As a publisher, Cock would have been well aware of the potential for ruins to appeal to collectors of art as well as those interested in Rome. The series were important and came to exert a lasting influence on landscape painting from mid-century, informing the work of Pieter Bruegel the Elder and Veronese.
