Chess.- Damiano de Odemeira. Libro da imparare giochare a scachi, collation: A-H8 64 numbered ff., roman letter, text in Italian and Spanish, large woodcut of two chess players on title and numerous woodcut diagrams in text, fore-margin of title trimmed close with loss of a hyphen and just shaving border of woodcut, 18th century French pale brown calf, spine gilt, edges gilt, slightly rubbed, head and foot of spine slightly chipped, joints partly cracked but firm, 8vo (140 x 91mm.), Rome, [c.1524].*** Extremely rare early edition of the first book to deal with the complete game and the first to give directions for playing without seeing the board.First printed in 1512, this is the second of several undated editions (1520–1540) described in detail by Dr A.van der Linde, Geschichte des Schachspiels, Berlin 1874, vol. I pp. 337–47. The woodcut on the title is the one used in Antonio Blado’s 1524 edition.Little is known about the author, a Portuguese apothecary, but his compilation is the first Italian work on modern chess and includes variations of Petrov’s defence, the gambit now called after him, the Giuoco Piano, and the Queen’s Gambit Accepted. Of particular interest are some of his pieces of advice: don’t play aimlessly, don’t play too fast; when you have a good move look for a better one; and use the ‘king’s leap’ (i.e. castling) for protection. Damiano is also the first to state that the board should be placed so that the lower right square is white. The section headed ‘Artede giocare alla mente’, beginning on H5 of this edition, is an explanation of how to play blindfold.Provenance: ‘De Truchis’(?) (16th century ownership inscription at foot of title and on final leaf); ‘Di Giulio . . .’, (obliterated seventeenth-century inscription on final leaf); Rev. George Innes (1759–1842, Master of Warwick School for half a century from 1792, with his bookplate); J. W. Rimington-Wilson (ownership inscription on back of front free endpaper and with his notes on recto and verso of front flyleaf). Sale, Sotheby's, 28 February 1928, lot 314, to Quaritch; Bernard Quaritch Catalogue 428 (1929), no. 387 (‘a good copy, the text is not cut into in any way’).Literature: Sander no. 2295 (citing this copy, classifying it as the fifth edition, and dating it after 1524); Van der Linde I p. 341; Palau records two or three editions (nos. 68221 and note, and 68223) but without sufficient detail to distinguish between them; A. Chicco, ‘Le edizioni italiane del Libro di Damiano’, L’Esopo 22 (June 1984), pp. 46–58. Library Hub records copies of undated editions which may or may not be the present edition (Bodleian and British Library). OCLC records six copies only: Braunschweig, Cleveland, Library of Congress, Princeton, UCLA, and State Library of Victoria.

* JOHN BELLANY CBE RA HRSA (SCOTTISH 1942 - 2013), THE PLAYERS (1967) oil on board, signed and dated "Feb 1967" verso unframed overall size 161cm x 183cm Note 1: Music was a big part of John Bellany's life and he grew up with a piano in the family home. His mother played and John had lessons from the age of eight. He later joined a band "The Blue Bonnets" and it monopolised his weekends almost to the end of his Edinburgh College of Art days. The Blue Bonnets were "the cultural sensation of East Lothian". When Bellany took up his place at The Royal College of Art in 1965 he was hungry for knowledge. The anonimity of London, the lost souls and loneliness, the joyless crowds on the tube and the lack of camaraderie after the smaller friendlier world of Edinburgh were alienating. His early RCA works showed the tensions and anxieties of metropolitan life. However, with the unwavering support of Carel Weight and his tutors he started his love affair with the capital and all the cultural opportunities it could offer. In the summer of 1967 Bellany, accompanied by Sandy Moffat and Alan Bold, visited what was then East Germany where they celebrated John's twenty-fifth birthday. During the trip, on a day of creeping fog, the trio visited the site of the Buchenwald Concentration camp. It was the "thunderbolt of all time" for Bellany. He was convinced that a loving God could never have countenanced such evil. "Buchenwald marked the true end of innocence for Bellany" "Hell obsessed him after Buchenwald" said Moffat. Dated verso "Feb 1967" in Bellany's hand "The Players" is a large and rare early example of the post Edinburgh and pre Buchenwald period in his career. Note 2: It is extraordinary to contemplate that Bellany was only in his mid twenties when he painted these exceptional works about which London Standard art critic Brian Sewell later commented ".... in the 1960s (Bellany) painted such pictures as to make us think him as a painter with Rembrandt". John Bellany's early work, especially the large oil on boards, is highly prized by collectors and their appearances at auction are ever rarer. The most recent example to appear in our auctions was "The Finnon Smoker" (1965) 183 x 122cm oil on board, lot 65 , 29th May 2022 which sold for £80,000 (hammer).Provenance: Acquired directly from the artist in the early 1970s by Mike Hanson of London and by descent. Mike Hanson taught scenic construction at Croydon College of Art on the Theatre Design course in the 1970s.

Colin Middleton RHA RUA MBE (1910-1983) K. Knitting Oil on canvas, 60 x 49cm (23¾ x 19¼") Signed Exhibited: Belfast, CEMA, January 1961, cat.no.11; ACNI Touring exhibition,1970, Colin Middleton 1960-1970, cat.no.77. Painted in the early 1960s, K Knitting is one of a series of works which are particularly revealing of Middleton’s domestic life at the time. During the 1940s and much of the 1950s, the figures in his paintings were often invented and symbolic; even in those cases where there had been some inspiration from life, as in Teresa, these figures were given a more universal significance. In the late 1950s Middleton began a series of paintings of his wife, Kathleen, seated at the piano, which he continued through much of the time when they were living in Belfast in the 1960s. There are also more intimate paintings from this time, of subjects including his eldest daughter, Alison, reading, and of Kathleen absorbed in various activities, with knitting apparently a favourite hobby. The present work was painted in Lisburn, where they lived when Middleton was first employed as Head of Art at Friends School. During this time, he balanced his job with an extremely busy exhibiting schedule, including a number of exhibitions with the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, in addition to regular, and generally successful, commercial exhibitions in Belfast and Dublin. The flattened picture space and geometric division of the image in K Knitting suggest the influence of Cubism, but might equally relate to the use of pattern and decorative, abstract form recalled from Middleton’s training and work as a damask designer, which became a strong influence in the 1960s. A similar technique is evident in other works of the period, including Red Landscape, Largymore, a rare landscape painted around Lisburn. A similar use of a dominant colour throughout the painting is evident in K Knitting, with powerful and shifting tones of red suggesting Kathleen’s strong personality and the artist’s absorption in painting his wife.Dickon Hall, February 2024

Two Philips C-90 cassette tapes and one Philips C-60, two with handwritten labels (very likely in the hand of Ringo Starr) 'INDIA' and 'MAHARESHI' the third with a sticker affixed bearing handwritten label 'MANILLA (sic) INDIA'. All three contain recordings made by Ringo Starr, likely on a personal tape recorder (see here for image of Ringo returning from tour carrying what appears to be a tape recorder), of various events throughout (mostly) 1966. All recordings have very likely never before been published. Approx 248 minutes of recordings across the tapes. At one point Ringo describes the tapes as 'a talking record of our trip to Germany and Japan'. Across the three tapes, which contain hours of candid conversations with The Beatles, Brian Epstein and others within the inner circle during that period, a small selection of 'highlights' includes:- Brian Epstein discussing how to avoid paying tax/import/export charges when leaving Japan.- Numerous humorous interludes with Ringo recording his thoughts on the tours - often in an array of voices. - Band discussions of the set list for the Japan tour.- Recordings from the Budokan concerts (segments of 'If I Needed Someone' and 'Day Tripper') possibly from stage or close to stage itself, seemingly more likely from the band listening back to the recordings, whilst still in Japan. Also John asking Brian Epstein what he thought of the show.- Recordings from Manila inc thoughts on the hotel ‘pretty crappy’. - Extensive recordings from July 1966 whilst in India including the group experimenting with Indian musical instruments.- Extensive recordings of the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi - possibly recorded later than ‘66- approx 38 minutes worth.- Recordings of Ringo solo with piano performing ‘Don’t Pass Me By’, an early version without full lyrics. - Recordings of Ringo at piano performing two likely unreleased demos - one with refrain ‘have you seen the tulips grow’ and one seemingly a version of 'I Bought A Picasso'Provenance: purchased by the vendor as part of a collection of Beatles memorabilia. By repute - the original owner had been an acquaintance of Ringo Starr during the 1960s. Accompanied by CDs containing copies of recordings. To view video click here: https://youtu.be/lGg4lPKPyWI?si=OlPx3ZR0jCKxsOTP
