Jacob Jordaens, Schelte A. Bolswert - Pan playing the flute / Description: The mythological Pan as a shepherd plays a flute sitting down near his flock of sheep and goats. The Latin caption states: ‘Pan is sitting laughingly under the sprouting top of a beech and sings in a sweet melodious voice. The youthful flock is dancing as an expression of happiness’. The figure of Pan and the little he-goat in front of him were copied from a work which Jordaens painted between 1630 and 1635 and which is now in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam (The Netherlands). Engraving made by Schelte Adamsz. Bolswert. State without publishers address (possibly erased). A charming print. / Dimensions: 34,70 x 43,10 cm / Condition: A good sharp, possibly slightly later impression on a full sheet of flat laid paper with full plate border and margins. CIRCLE OF ADRIAEN VAN DE VENNE (DUTCH 1589-1662) WOMAN BY A TABLE Oil on panel Inscribed (upper right) 69 x 57cm (27 x 22¼ in.) Provenance: Purchased by Coughlan Briscoe, London, for Judge James Murnaghan, circa 1930The inscription translates roughly as 'The pan is not for scouring'.Please note measurements do not include the frame unless otherwise stated. Condition Report: The panel presents a thin layer of dirt and a thick layer of varnish across the whole surface. There is no significant warping of the panel, but various scratches across, such as on the centre, where there are evident superficial scratches which have taken off small sections the paint, and various superficial scratches on the borders, where there has been some abrasion with the frame. UV light reveals various retouches in the background areas, most evidently on the left of the woman, where patches of 3 cm have been restored. A few but smaller retouches are present on the left cheek of the figure, a couple on the dress, and a few more on the area of the table. To conclude, there is a 20 cm crack which starts on the bottom right and reaches the height of the table. Clarice Cliff Peter Pan Crocus square fruit bowl, for Newport Pottery Bizarre range, approx 21.5 x 20 cms together with a similar Athens design Peter Pan Crocus jug approx 9 cms h. (2) Condition Report Both bowl and jug are in good overall condition, a couple of losses to paintwork noted on the frieze and a scratch to the purple crocus.The jug is good order with minimal scratches, both the blue and orange crocus are scratched to one side.
