Lot 296

A 19th Century character jug as Toby Philpott with jug of ale and pipe, inscribed "Hearty Good Fellow", together with another sponge ware decorated character jug as a seated Toby Philpott with pipe and jug of ale CONDITION REPORTS Toby jugs - "Hearty Good Fellow" - pipe seems original, several areas of craquelure to the glaze and wear to the black of the hat / rim. Base with clear damage and repair both to the cracked areas and to the base - now with a grey/blue colouration. See images for further details. "Toby Philipott" overall seems in good order though there is a sign of firing crack to the top section of the scroll handle. The glass has a crack between the base of the glass and hand though this appears to be glazed over suggesting that it is a firing crack. As regards the pipe, it is a very unusual shape and again is glazed over by the chin / lip suggesting originality. It seems hard to believe that the piece would be re-fired with this added later so we believe that it is probably original. The pipe does however have a chip to the bowl (see image). Right hand has a firing crack to the sleeve. See images for more details.
