HOLLAND P.  Select Views of the Lakes in Cumberland, Westmorland and Lancashire, from Drawings made by P. Holland, Engraved by C. Rosenberg, (dedicated to) Daniel Daulby Esq., a Lover of the Arts. This Daulby`s copy with his bookplate of an artist reclining in a garden. 3 sets, each of 21 aquatint plates, the first with title "The Only Set of Proofs Extant" (these being proofs before letters), the 2nd set, again with title, being a "Pick`d set, one of thirty, before the line with the dates" & the 3rd set with title being "A pick`d set in brown, the plates retouched and finished". The latter interspersed with the relevant text leaves. Manuscript final leaf with notes & index. Oblong quarto. Red Russia. Liverpool, 1792. Daulby, the dedicatee, a brewer & collector, hailed from Liverpool as did Holland, and was married to the only sister of William Roscoe. Daulby retired to Rydal Mount in 1796. He was a compiler of a catalogue of Rembrandt etchings.  After his death, his collection took up eight days of auction sales in Liverpool and four in London. Condition report:Scuffing to front and rear cover. Spine cracked and dried with traces of gilt lettering remaining. Yellowing to interior pages with foxing towards front section of book, plates appear unaffected.

Contemporary half leather, papered boards, leather gilt title label to upper cover. Sometime re-backed with original back-strip laid-on. (1) Notes: Binding square and tight (structurally sound) due to previous professional repair/restoration.  A couple of plates with marginal patches of foxing, the majority are clean and bright. Debrett et al., 1799.*** Delightful architectural pattern book with unusual plates by a pupil of James Paine, from primitive huts to grand mansions. The designs include Gothic cottages, Regency villas, Chinese and Turkish garden buildings.

Polar.- Weddell (James) A Voyage towards the South Pole, first edition, hand-coloured aquatint frontispiece, 8 engraved maps, most folding, 6 aquatint plates, some folding, folding maps and plates linen-backed, soiling, ex-library copy with ink stamp 'Portico' on plate versos and occasionally in text and on one plate recto, modern green morocco, spine faded, [Abbey, Travel 609; Hill p.322; Sabin 102431], 8vo, 1825.*** Weddell's expedition 'visited and described the Cape Verde Islands, South Orkney Islands, South Shetland Islands, and South Georgia Islands, wintered in the Falkland Islands, and described Tierra del Fuego, Patagonia, and Montevideo. During their southward sailing, they reached the lowest latitude as yet then recorded. This area explored now bears the name Weddell Sea' (Hill).

Russia.- Le Prince (Jean-Baptiste) Divers Ajustements et Usages de Russie..., 80 engraved plates, divided into 11 suites, including 8 etchings and aquatint printed in sepia, some light browning, small hole to one plate, contemporary half calf, rubbed, large 4to, [Paris], [c.1764-75]. *** Le Prince's work is based on the extensive collection of drawings he produced while living, travelling and working for Catherine the Great in Russia and Eastern Europe in the five years up to 1763. These 11 suites depict the costumes of peasants, soldiers, merchants and clergymen as well as scenes and views of Livonia and St Petersburg. The last 8 plates utilise the aquatint technique which Le Prince is said to have developed and perfected in 1768, incidentally the year to which this suite is dated [Britannica].

Sams (W., publisher) Roman Triumph. Pompey, hand-coloured aquatint panorama, numbered segments 4-35 only on conjoined sheets forming continuous strip (lacking first three segments 1-3 but with engraved imprint at end), c.130 x 4845mm. (of 4880mm.), rather soiled and stained at beginning, segment 4 defective at head and frayed at foot, a couple of short tears to head of 12, lacking portion from sky of 33, all repaired, otherwise clean and bright, on roller housed in original boxwood drum covered in glazed hand-coloured aquatint pictorial label, drum c.170mm. tall, top lacking portion at edge and base chipped, [Abbey, Life 489, without drum; Bobins 1311], W.Sams, 1822. *** Rare panorama depicting Pompey's third triumph in 61 B.C. after his successes in the East, particularly his victory of Mithridates. The strip processes from left to right but is numbered right to left and features trumpeters, sacrificial oxen, standard bearers, mounted & foot soldiers, carts of booty, camels, models of conquered cities, captives, musicians, and a chariot pulled by elephants carrying the victorious general. It was advertised as being with a descriptive key but no copy of this has been found. The Abbey copy consisted of sections 1-33 only and lacked the drum. We have traced a single copy at auction, in 1973, but this was also defective. WorldCat records one copy only (Princeton).

Ackermann, 1821 [but later, some plates dated 1822].
