Shopping sustainably at auction: here’s how much co2e you could save if you purchased a Rolex watch through auction
24 August 2023 Buying a Rolex might sound like the ultimate indulgence but do it right and you could do it while caring for your wallet and the planet.
Joseph James & Partners of Leicestershire features a series of unworn luxury watches in its weekly timed auction ending September 14. The first lot in the sale is an August 2022 ice blue Rolex Cosmograph Daytona, Platinum edition. There is currently a 10 year waiting list for the model, which is offered here with its paperwork. Bidding opens on September 7.
At auction, second-hand Rolexes – even those that are only slightly used – are often cheaper than their new counterparts. And buying choosing to buy pre-loved means that you’ll be winning on an environmental level too. A carbon emissions study commissioned by Auction Technology Group found that buying a watch second hand would save an estimated 0.8 tonnes of CO2 emissions compared with buying a new one.
