How to add art and antiques to your home for that interior designer look
31 May 2023 Adding touches of Arts & Crafts, Mid Century Modern or Modern British art is a way to bring that ‘interior designer style’ to your own home.Here are five items of art and antiques coming up at online auction in June.
1. Sideboard and table
This laminated wood sideboard and table were designed by Scottish architect Sir Basil Spence (1907-76). Spence is famed for his work on Coventry Cathedral in England as well as numerous other Modernist style buildings. The sideboard and table are part of a well-known suite designed in 1947-48 and produced in 1949 as part of the Allegro series. Spence designed this line for Glasgow firm Morris & Co. A full Allegro suite is held by the National Museum of Scotland. These examples still have the label Morris Made Guaranteed Trade Mark Glasgow and are estimated at £3000-5000 at McTear’s on June 7.
2. Eric Ravilious lithograph
Eric Ravilious (1903-42) was an English painter, designer, book illustrator and wood-engraverand is well-known for his watercolours. In 1938 he produced designs for 24 lithographs for High Street, a book about shops printed by the Curwen Press.
Original lithographs are the originals, while modern digitally printed reproductions can also be found for sale elsewhere.
