This ruby and diamond dress ring from the early 20th century in 18ct yellow gold is set with a round cut ruby within a border of single cut diamonds.

3. Opal stud earrings

A pair of Ethiopian opal stud earrings – estimated at £60-80 at McTear’s.

Many items appearing at auction are affordable and represent great value. The sale at McTear’s on January 21 includes a group of six lots of stud earrings, all with different coloured stones and estimated at under £120.

4. Pearl necklace

A natural freshwater pearl sautoir necklace – estimated at £600-800 at Elmwood’s.

If pearls are your thing, then you’re in luck – there are plenty of pearl necklaces, bracelets, rings and pendants that regularly appear at auctions on this website.

An example at Elmwood’s sale on January 19 is this pearl sautoir necklace in platinum. It features 17 natural freshwater pearls and an 18ct white gold clasp. It is also detachable into three pieces to become bracelets.

5. Tiffany bracelet

Jewellery by the world’s most famous brands like Cartier, Tiffany & Co, Van Cleef & Arpels and Georg Jensen appear regularly at auctions on thesaleroom.com and they can often be bought at prices significantly below retail levels.
