Antique typewriters and office supplies puts new spin on working from home at online sale

A Sholes & Glidden typewriter, estimate €15,000-25,000 at Auction Team Breker.

Among the 740 lots in the office antiques, photographica and film sale on April 4 is an array of historic typewriters.

1. Sholes & Glidden typewriter 

A highlight in the auction is a Sholes & Glidden typewriter from 1873 estimated at €15,000-25,000. Including the elements which became fundamental to typewriter design, including the four-row QWERTY keyboard still common to all laptops, it is generally considered the first successful typewriter in the world. This model has floral decoration with the serial no. A901. It is in good condition (but missing a ribbon and one typebar guide).

2. International double keyboard typewriter

Parish Manufacturing Co typewriter, estimate €7000-11,000 at Auction Team Breker.

For international collectors an 1886 typewriter by Parish Manufacturing Co in New York could be the thing for you. This model has a double keyboard and was designed by the American typewriter designer Lucien Crandall. With serial no. 3219, it is estimated at €7000-11,000.

3. Mimeograph typewriter

Mimeograph typewriter, estimate €5000-8000 at Auction Team Breker.

An unusual entry in the sale is an Edison Mimeograph typewriter. Mimeographs were early copying machines or stencil duplicating machines and Team Breker describes this one as “exceptionally rare”. The 1894 model made by AB Dick & Co in Chicago is in original condition and estimated at €5000-8000.

4. Cash register

A Mechanical Cashier cash register, estimate €3000-5000 at Auction Team Breker.

Also included in the sale is a number of early cash registers as well as photographic equipment. This Mechanical Cashier model from 1899 was invented by IS Dement & CF Bassett in Chicago. Decorated with flowers it is estimated at €3000-5000.
