1. View of Tower Bridge

Peter Gilman (1928-1984) was a painter who liked to depict topographical views while working in situ outdoors. He used oil, acrylic and watercolour and his style was much influenced by the works of fellow painter Edward Seago.

He later joined the Wapping Group of Artists and established a reputation for his landscapes.

An example of an urban subject is on offer at Kings Russell on August 18. Buttress of Tower Bridge Evening, pictured above, is a small acrylic on board from 1979. It is signed and is reminiscent of Seago’s technique and tonal quality.

It is estimated at £100-200.

2. Welsh artist’s still life

20th century Welsh artist Moss Williams was best known for his landscapes. He exhibited one titled Yr Hen Dorrwr Beddau at the Paris Salon and another titled Pont Maesincla is now in the council collection of his native Caernarfon.

This still-life that will be offered at Rogers Jones on August 18 is more unusual. The 14.5 x 10.5in (37 x 27cm) watercolour, which is signed and dated 1954, is a richly coloured study of fruit, vessels and a pottery hen on a table.

It is estimated at £100-200.

4. Brazilian artist’s balloon flight

Henry Victor Santos painting

‘Um Cantinho de Amor’ by Brazilian artist Henry Victor Santos – £460 at Bourne End Auction Rooms.

A painting titled Um Cantinho de Amor (A little Place of Love) by Brazilian artist Henry Victor Santos (b.1939) drew interest at Bourne End Auction Rooms on August 5.

The subject of a balloon flight over a landscape with bungalows, fields and flowers meant it was somewhat different to his colourful cityscape subjects. The 3ft 4in x 6ft (1 x 2m) oil on canvas was estimated at £200-300 and it was knocked down at £360, outselling another street scene with children by the artist that fetched £110 at the same sale.

‘Resting by the roadside’ by Daniel Sherrin – £500 at Bonhams.

This painting by Daniel Sherrin (1868-1940) was offered at Bonhams’ Home and Interiors sale in Knightsbridge on August 5.

The 2ft x 3ft 6in (62cm x 1.07m) oil on canvas titled Resting by the roadside was typical of the landscapes of the Norfolk and Suffolk countryside in which he specialised along with maritime scenes.

This signed example sold on mid-estimate.
