A rare presentation gilt brass and silver carriage clock, with a replaced platform lever escapement striking on a gong, half hours, with a white enamel dial having an embossed silver sleeve with thistles and soldiers and centred a coat of arms, flanked by banners 'SOUTH AFRICA 1900-1901', the base panel inscribed 'Presented to Private Alfred Gilchrist, A.& S.H, in recognition of patriotic service in The South African Campaign, Helensburgh, June 1901,' Hallmarked for Elkington & Co Ltd, London 1901, the case with laurel and oak leaf decoration with a swing handle and pointed feet, 10in (25.5cm) h; winding key
