An Interesting Early Silver Wristwatch, signed Longines, circa 1915, 15-jewel lever movement, bimetallic compensation balance, silvered dial with Arabic numerals, case with wire lugs, cuvette with engraved inscription "with love from mother & father xmas 1915" and hinged back also inscribed "Lieut B J Mothersill 99th Essex Battalion C.E.F", 35mm wide See illustration Barton Joseph Mothersill was commissioned as Lieutenant with the 99th Battalion (Windsor, Canada) in 1915. He transferred to the 7th Machine Gun Battalion, C.E.F (Canadian Expeditionary Force), where he was later promoted to Captain. He was awarded the Military Cross "for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during the attack and capture of St.Oile on 29th September, 1915, in that he, though severely wounded, handled his battery most ably". He rejoined the Essex Scottish as an Officer when WWII broke out in 1939, and went overseas with the regiment, serving until 1943. After the war he took his discharge in England. This watch is sold with a newspaper clipping and information kindly given by the present owner.
