Thessaly. Larissa. AR Drachm, ca. 370-360 BC. 6.07 gms. AΛEY, head of Aleuas facing ¾ left, wearing conical helmet, labrys at left, rev. ΛAPIΣAIA-EΛΛA, Eagle standing left, head reverted, on thunderbolt. Lorber Thessalian 94, Hermann pl. VII, 11; Jameson 2469; Gulbenkian 473, BMC 12. There are many theories as to the depiction of Aleuas on this rare and enigmatic type. Seltman believed that the image of Aleuas, founder of the ruling house of Thessaly, was used to promote the claims by an Aleuad noble, Hellokrates against Alexander of Pherei in 361 BC. The reverse legend "ELLA" would seem to support this. Sordi, however, dates this coin to the reign of Alexander the Great of Macedon and suggests that he issued this coin to underline the joint ancestry of the Thessalian and Macedonian royal houses.
