A pair of fine Louis XVI silver gilt candelabra by Henri Auguste (1759-1816), Paris 1789, each with three acanthus scroll branches joined to a central branch above entwined serpents, the gadrooned nozzles with detachable crested drip pans, the tapering columns with anthemion leaf band and on a circular foot with egg and dart border engraved with Cassillis armorial, the base rim inscribed `Auguste Fils Orfevre du Roi, Paris, 1789`, the inner foot inscribed, 144oz, 13 DWts, No8 and 146oz, 2 DWrts No12, 60cm high 38cm wide (2). Henri Auguste became a master silversmith in 1785. Like his father he was Orfevre du Roi, producing work for The Royal Family from 1784 to 1786. He, together with Biennais and Odiot were the leading exponents of the Directoire and Consulate periods. William Beckford was one of his clients. A tea pot stand 1788 is at Brodick Castle, Isle of Arran. Later he had commissions from Napoleon and for the City of Paris. Awarded gold medal in the third Exposition de l`Industrie of 1802
