Lalitha Lajmi (1932 - 2023)

Watercolour on Paper

21 x 29 Inches

Signed & Dated Lower Left

Year - 2017

By the final decade of her life, watercolour had become Lajmi’s preferred medium. She continued to stage deeply personal scenes that drew on memory, observation, and dream.

The painting recalls her long engagement with theatre and psychoanalysis — recurring elements in her practice since the 1970s. Figures appear both present and distant, as if caught between conversation and recollection. The seated woman in glasses, a recurring persona in her late works, gestures in quiet reflection; around her, the floating or reclining forms evoke fragments of lived experience.

Lajmi often painted into the night in her Lokhandwala home, translating her memories into translucent washes of pigment. In these late works, the vivid theatricality of her earlier oils gives way to something more introspective — a visual diary of thought, emotion, and endurance.
