Lalitha Lajmi (1932 - 2023)

Oil on Canvas

48 x 36 Inches

Signed & Dated Upper Right

Year - 2007

Painted in 2007, this work belongs to Lalitha Lajmi’s mature phase, when she returned to oil with a renewed clarity of form and colour. The three figures seated around a table — one of them wearing a pointed cap and pale face — recall the recurring clown motif that had appeared throughout her practice. The theme traces back to her early explorations of masks in the 1970s, a period she described as the beginning of her search for form and identity.

The composition’s quiet theatricality and restrained palette connect this late work to Lajmi’s lifelong interest in performance, intimacy, and the subtle drama of human relationships.

Provenance - The Artist's Estate
