This striking standing figure shows how Sunil Madhav Sen carried the textures of Rarh Bengal into his modernist language. The segmented, almost totem-like form echoes the clay idols he first saw crafted by Ananta Patua in Bankura, an early influence that stayed with him for life.
Here, Sen uses oil and textured surface work to build up a sculptural effect — part of his signature method of layering pigment, scraping, and working oil like clay. By the 1960s–70s, he often treated board or paper with turpentine and mixed media, creating a low-relief feel inspired by the earthy craft of his childhood landscape.
