A rare George IV silver presentation school medal
maker`s mark WB struck twice to the suspension loop, of circular form with engraved wrigglework border, engraved `Mr. W. Berry`s Academy, Vauvert Road, Guernsey` around an engraved medal suspended from a feather, swag and ribbon mount with engraved inscription `The Reward of Merit`, the reverse inscribed Obtained by W. R. Ferguson for preeminence in Reading, Carriage & Poetry, Dec. 1827`, 2in. (5cm.) high, 1 5/8in. (4.2cm.) diameter.
* A similar medal was sold in Martel Maides` auction in June 2013, lot 410A. An earlier example from Mr. Berry`s Academy, dated 1818, it had very similar decorative engraving but lacked the address engraved on this medal. The Gazette de l`Isle de Guernesey dated March 9, 1811 advertises a previous change of address for the academy to "Miss Smith`s house in Havilland Street". It is believed that this medal may have been made by a local Guernsey silversmith and marked with the recipient`s initials.
