Description
Early nineteenth century shaped hinged box embossed with foliate scrolls and a central figurative scene, gilt interior. Several marks to the base including hallmarks for Chester 1835 also marked with the foreign mark, width at the widest point 3 1/4ins (8cm). Together with a white metal rectangular hinged box embossed with a floral scroll motif and a central scene depicting a female figure with goats to the lid, gilt interior, width 3 1/4ins (8cm). Total combined weight 7.25ozt (225.6gms). (2). Both boxes are in good condition. Both have surface scratches to the whole, and both have shallow dents to the base. They also both have areas of tarnish and discolouration. he white metal box has some patches of solder under the rim of the body and on the top of the lid, either from its manufacture or from possible repair work. It also has a hole in one of the bottom corners. The gilding on the inside is in good condition, but there are build-ups of dirt in the corners. The lid fits tightly and well. On the bottom of the box is a pattern which is badly rubbed. he silver box has a crack in it above the hinge on the back of the lid. The gilding inside is a little worn but still mostly intact. The lid fits well and hinges move easily. The hallmark on the base is very clear, and the one on the lid is rubbed but still legible. he embossed decoration on both boxes is rubbed, and although the pattern can still be seen easily, some of the finer details have been lost.
