A pair of Arts and Crafts silver hammered bowls by Gilbert Marks, London 1896, signed and dated `Gilbert Marks 97`, hammered and chased with lobing to the sides and with differing fruits, 23cm (9in) diameter, 980g (31.5 oz). Provenance: The Estate of the late Professor Rupert Hall and Mrs Hall. Gilbert Leigh Marks (1861-1905) of all the `art silversmiths` (as they were known at the time) was possibly the most strongly and publicily committed to the principles of the Arts and Crafts movement.
