Missing Persons Reward Broadside. £100 Reward. Missing from his Home, a Youth named Matthew Middlewood, printed J.L. Foster, York, [1867], giving details of the sixteen-year-old boy who had last been seen at York railway station on 10th August when taking leave of his friend for home on the Harrogate train, giving a physical description, details of clothing and jewellery and asking for information to be passed to [his father] George Middlewood of 35 Regent Parade, High Harrogate, or Samuel Haley, Chief Constable, York, printed date at York Police Office given as 24th August 1867, two vertical folds, docketed to verso, 25.5 x 31.5cm. The description of the missing youth gives his age as sixteen and he wore a small silver lever watch, No. 13,160, made by Barmby of Hull. The Cambridge alumni database shows that Matthew Middlewood went up to St. John`s College, Cambridge in 1870; BA 1874; MA 1878. It notes his father George as maltster and brewer, late of Cincinnati, Ohio. Matthew`s death at sea on 31 May 1881, aged 29, is recorded in the York Herald, Melbourne Argus and other papers. The death notices state that he died onboard the SS Rosetta after five years` illness from phthisis, and that he was the youngest surviving son of George and Sarah Middlewood, of Rufforth Hall, near York. In 1882 the RNLI renamed one of its lifeboats the Matthew Middlewood, thanks to a bequest from his father, the lifeboat being launched at Flamborough on 5th June 1882. (1)
