A Great War M.M. group of three awarded to Acting Sergeant E. Hewins, Northumberland Fusiliers, late Royal Horse Artillery and Gloucestershire Regiment Military Medal, G.V.R. (56730 Cpl. E. Hewins. 2/Nth’d: Fus:) Battalion number officially corrected; Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 6 clasps, Cape Colony, Relief of Kimberley, Paardeberg, Driefontein, Johannesburg, Wittebergen (9061 Dr. E. Hewins. R.H.A.) number officially corrected; King’s South Africa 1901-02, 2 clasps, South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902 (9061 Dvr. E. Hewins. R.H.A.) the QSA and KSA both later issues (see footnote), nearly extremely fine (3) £300-£400 --- M.M. London Gazette 2 April 1918. Edward Hewins was born in Winchcombe, Gloucestershire, in 1876 and attested for the Devonshire Regiment at Cheltenham on 21 January 1895, having previously served in the 4th (Militia) Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment. He transferred to the Royal Horse Artillery on 1 April 1895 and served with them in India from 14 October 1897 to 17 December 1898, and in South Africa during the Boer War from 15 November 1899 to 28 January 1903. He was convicted of stealing money from a comrade on 19 December 1904, and was discharged in disgrace on 12 January 1905, forfeiting all his service and Queen’s South Africa and King’s South Africa Medals from the Boer War. Following the outbreak of the Great War Hewins attested for the Gloucestershire Regiment, and served with the 7th Battalion during the Great War in the Gallipoli theatre of War from 19 September 1915. Transferring to the Northumberland Fusiliers, he was advanced Acting Sergeant, and was awarded the Military Medal whilst serving on the Western Front with the 2nd Battalion. He was discharged Class ‘Z’ Reserve following the cessation of hostilities; his Queen’s South Africa and King’s South Africa Medals were restored to him in April 1921. Sold with copied research.
